“What I do you cannot do; but what you do, I cannot do.
The needs are great, and none of us, including me, ever do
great things. But we can all do small things, with great love,
and together we can do something wonderful.”

“For over 50 years,
Austin gave his time
and talents to support
our healthcare and
education mission.
It would please him
greatly to see his
children carry on
his legacy.”
—Sister Virginia Ann
Wanzek, C.R.
Provincial Superior
of the Sisters of the
Resurrection
“We have supported the mission of the Sisters since
before Resurrection Medical Center was built almost
60 years ago,” said Marilyn McNichols, referring
to herself and her husband, Austin, who passed away
in 2008. “We have always respected their commitment
to bringing quality healthcare to the community.”
Austin McNichols devoted countless volunteer
hours and gave many generous contributions to
ensure the success and growth of the Sisters’
mission. Now the next generation of the McNichols
family is carrying on the legacy of supporting
Catholic healthcare in Chicago.
Jim McNichols and his sister Susie McNichols Cassidy
are both members of the Resurrection Development
Foundation Board of Directors. Jim’s family made
a pledge toward the newly opened Northwest Wing
of Resurrection Medical Center.
“I continue my involvement because of how
impressed I am with the leadership of the organization
and the mission the System serves,” Jim said.
“Resurrection has a wonderful story to tell in terms
of the innovative healthcare it delivers.”
Susie works on behalf of Saints Mary and Elizabeth
Medical Center and helps to plan the annual
Monarch Ball. “I love planning the benefits that help
raise significant funds for programs that make a big
difference in patients’ lives,” Susie said. “It’s fun
to work alongside donors who knew my father and
who share their memories of him.”
The legacy of donors like the McNichols family mirrors
the legacy of the Sisters, which has been firmly
rooted in the communities they have served for
more than 100 years.

Our Partners
are our windows to the world.
Through our shared objectives and
perseverance, no walls can stand
in our way.
Dr. Lekshmi Nair, Radiologist, with Michael Ziener,
Executive Director of Chicagoland-Area Affiliate of
Susan G. Komen For The Cure®, and Gladys Aguirre,
Manager of Community Education at Saints Mary
and Elizabeth Medical Center.
A world without breast cancer
Since 2007, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has
helped Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center
and Saint Francis Hospital care for women in some
of the most medically underserved neighborhoods
in Chicago. These women are significantly at risk
for developing breast cancer and they are less likely
to receive regular screening mammograms.
Over the past five years, Komen has granted nearly
$600,000, making possible free breast cancer
screenings to more than 5,000 uninsured and
underinsured women.
“Komen is proud to fund breast health education
and screening programs at Saints Mary and
Elizabeth Medical Center in Chicago and Saint
Francis Hospital in Evanston,” said Michael Ziener,
Executive Director, Chicagoland-Area Affiliate of
Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. “These hospitals are
dedicating cutting-edge screening technologies and
education and outreach programs to communities
that are in desperate need of these services.”
“We are proud to partner with them as we get
closer to a world without breast cancer,” he added.
Reaching out to women who might not otherwise
have access to mammography is an expression
of our health care mission. Without this partnership
with Komen, many women would not receive a
diagnosis or treatment until it is too late.
“When I went in for my mammogram, I was honest
about my situation,” said Liz McDermott Henderson.
“Even though I didn’t have insurance, everyone was
incredible. I felt very safe and secure, and I knew I
was in good hands. I can’t thank everyone enough
at the Komen Foundation and Saint Francis Hospital
for the care I received.”
“These hospitals are
dedicating outreach to
communities that are
in desperate need of
these services.”

Sister Kathleen Stadler, CSFN,
Executive Director of Resurrection
Retirement Community, with John
Barbie, resident and donor
One donor changes lives of many
A survivor of a Communist concentration camp,
John Barbie immigrated from Europe to the United
States in 1948 with only a dime in his pocket.
After a life defined by hard work, he became
a successful self-made man, retiring in 1984 after
a 26-year career with the Leo Burnett advertising
agency in Chicago. He worked just as hard in his
spare time, traveling the world and indulging his
passions for opera, poetry and jigsaw puzzles.
John returned to a familiar neighborhood on
the northwest side of Chicago when he moved
into Resurrection Retirement Community (RRC),
an independent living facility. He not only became
a resident but the architect of a dream. Within the
first year, he had an idea that would improve the
daily lives and safety of his fellow 500 residents.
With a generous contribution of more than
$300,000, John financed the installation of ventilation
fans and a lifeline alarm system. In a very real way,
he was changing lives and saving lives.
“We appreciate John’s gifts,” said Sister Kathleen
Stadler, RRC’s Executive Director and member of
the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. “Through
his generosity, residents have cooler rooms on hot
summer days and increased safety in the facility.”
Donors like John are the pillars that support our
dreams and improve the lives of the people and
communities we serve.
“I look forward to supporting the next project
to improve the quality of life at RRC,” John said.
“I hope to inspire other people to give, too.”
“Through John’s
generosity, all RRC
residents have cooler
rooms on hot summer
days and increased
safety and security
in the facility.”
—Sister Kathleen
Stadler, CSFN
RRC’s Executive Director

Our Donors
are our pillars. Through their unyielding
generosity, we are supported and lifted
to new levels of excellence.

Our Caregivers
are our foundation. Through their
dedication, knowledge and skill, we are
able to reach new heights in the care
of the human body, mind and spirit.
Dr. Mark Connolly, Chair of the
Department of Surgery and Director
of the Center for Cancer Care at Saint
Joseph Hospital in Chicago, with his
former patient Suzanne Zaccone.

“Then I met Dr. Mark
Connolly,” she
continued. “I knew
that I was with not
only a medical genius
and surgical artist, but
a caregiver as well.”
—Suzanne Zaccone
Grateful patient and
author
What does a patient do when she has been
diagnosed with breast cancer?
“When the big C reared its ugly head for me, I
responded by seeking five opinions,” said Suzanne
Zaccone about choosing a doctor to help fight her
battle. “Then I met Dr. Mark Connolly,” she said.
“I knew that I was with not only a medical genius
and surgical artist, but a caregiver as well.”
Dr. Connolly is the Medical Director of the Center
for Cancer Care at Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago.
Suzanne was impressed when he answered two
pages of questions with “extreme sensitivity” and
put her “instantly at ease.”
“He sealed the deal with a statement I will never
forget. ‘Suzanne,’ he said, ‘I am certain that you
would receive excellent care wherever you decide
to go. All I can tell you is that I am a very good
surgeon and I will take very good care of you.’”
“That was the perfect answer for me.”
Suzanne survived cancer and the experience
changed how she sees the world. “It’s changed the
person I am, the partner I am, the sister I am,” she
said. “The daughter, friend, and aunt I am today.”
Suzanne believes the Zaccone Family Foundation
holds an obligation to give back when it can, as well
as to honor people who make magic happen every
day, people like Dr. Connolly. She recently did just
that by making her first $50,000 gift to purchase
new technology that identifies cancerous lymph
nodes. This makes surgery more precise and less
invasive for the patient. She intends to continue
supporting the physician she is so grateful to.
“I now am more able to recognize,” Suzanne
concluded, “that we are all connected and everything
has meaning if you just take the time to look for it.”
Surviving cancer changes everything
13
“The most rewarding aspect of philanthropy is
connecting donors’ passion to a cause worthy
of their support,” said Ken Bauwens, Chair of
the Resurrection Development Foundation Board
of Directors. “I’ve seen first-hand how generous
gifts have made a meaningful impact on those
who need us most,” he added.
Ken’s volunteer relationship with Saint Joseph
Hospital began in 1993 when he was approached by
Sister Theresa Peck, DC. Ken also worked closely
for many years with Lee McDonnell, former head
of fundraising at Saint Joseph Hospital. Now 19
years later, Ken has participated in 18 golf outings,
attended 12 Monarch Balls and has contributed
more than $350,000. His generosity is both
personal and through his company, Jamerson
& Bauwens Electrical Contractors, Inc, with his
business partner Richard Jamerson.
“Ken is one of the architects of our unique and
remarkable structure of board members and
volunteers,” said Amy Day, Vice President of
Resurrection Development Foundation. “They have
rolled up their sleeves and are connecting us to
people in the community interested in supporting
our cause. Ken is a stellar example of this. We are
fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers that carry
out our mission every day.”
All our board members and volunteers are linked
through their partnership and steadfast commitment.
Together we can do more than we can ever do alone.
Together we can change how healthcare is delivered
in the communities we have the privilege of serving.
Together we can do more than we can do alone
“We are fortunate
to have hundreds
of volunteers that
carry out our mission
every day.”

medical care to low-income, chronically ill and socially
isolated elderly clients regardless of their ability to
pay. Here Anita Joyce Messenger is visited at home by

  • 3. 5 “For over 50 years, Austin gave his time and talents to support our healthcare and education mission. It would please him greatly to see his children carry on his legacy.” —Sister Virginia Ann Wanzek, C.R. Provincial Superior of the Sisters of the Resurrection “We have supported the mission of the Sisters since before Resurrection Medical Center was built almost 60 years ago,” said Marilyn McNichols, referring to herself and her husband, Austin, who passed away in 2008. “We have always respected their commitment to bringing quality healthcare to the community.” Austin McNichols devoted countless volunteer hours and gave many generous contributions to ensure the success and growth of the Sisters’ mission. Now the next generation of the McNichols family is carrying on the legacy of supporting Catholic healthcare in Chicago. Jim McNichols and his sister Susie McNichols Cassidy are both members of the Resurrection Development Foundation Board of Directors. Jim’s family made a pledge toward the newly opened Northwest Wing of Resurrection Medical Center. “I continue my involvement because of how impressed I am with the leadership of the organization and the mission the System serves,” Jim said. “Resurrection has a wonderful story to tell in terms of the innovative healthcare it delivers.” Susie works on behalf of Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center and helps to plan the annual Monarch Ball. “I love planning the benefits that help raise significant funds for programs that make a big difference in patients’ lives,” Susie said. “It’s fun to work alongside donors who knew my father and who share their memories of him.” The legacy of donors like the McNichols family mirrors the legacy of the Sisters, which has been firmly rooted in the communities they have served for more than 100 years. Leaving a legacy of commitment (From left, back) Jim and Jill McNichols, John and Susie Cassidy; (front) Bob and Karen McNichols and Marilyn McNichols. • 4. 7 Our Partners are our windows to the world. Through our shared objectives and perseverance, no walls can stand in our way. Dr. Lekshmi Nair, Radiologist, with Michael Ziener, Executive Director of Chicagoland-Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure®, and Gladys Aguirre, Manager of Community Education at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center. A world without breast cancer Since 2007, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has helped Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center and Saint Francis Hospital care for women in some of the most medically underserved neighborhoods in Chicago. These women are significantly at risk for developing breast cancer and they are less likely to receive regular screening mammograms. Over the past five years, Komen has granted nearly $600,000, making possible free breast cancer screenings to more than 5,000 uninsured and underinsured women. “Komen is proud to fund breast health education and screening programs at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in Chicago and Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston,” said Michael Ziener, Executive Director, Chicagoland-Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. “These hospitals are dedicating cutting-edge screening technologies and education and outreach programs to communities that are in desperate need of these services.” “We are proud to partner with them as we get closer to a world without breast cancer,” he added. Reaching out to women who might not otherwise have access to mammography is an expression of our health care mission. Without this partnership with Komen, many women would not receive a diagnosis or treatment until it is too late. “When I went in for my mammogram, I was honest about my situation,” said Liz McDermott Henderson. “Even though I didn’t have insurance, everyone was incredible. I felt very safe and secure, and I knew I was in good hands. I can’t thank everyone enough at the Komen Foundation and Saint Francis Hospital for the care I received.” “These hospitals are dedicating outreach to communities that are in desperate need of these services.” —Michael Ziener Executive Director, Chicagoland-Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Give online at: giving.reshealth.org
  • 5. 9 Sister Kathleen Stadler, CSFN, Executive Director of Resurrection Retirement Community, with John Barbie, resident and donor One donor changes lives of many A survivor of a Communist concentration camp, John Barbie immigrated from Europe to the United States in 1948 with only a dime in his pocket. After a life defined by hard work, he became a successful self-made man, retiring in 1984 after a 26-year career with the Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago. He worked just as hard in his spare time, traveling the world and indulging his passions for opera, poetry and jigsaw puzzles. John returned to a familiar neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago when he moved into Resurrection Retirement Community (RRC), an independent living facility. He not only became a resident but the architect of a dream. Within the first year, he had an idea that would improve the daily lives and safety of his fellow 500 residents. With a generous contribution of more than $300,000, John financed the installation of ventilation fans and a lifeline alarm system. In a very real way, he was changing lives and saving lives. “We appreciate John’s gifts,” said Sister Kathleen Stadler, RRC’s Executive Director and member of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. “Through his generosity, residents have cooler rooms on hot summer days and increased safety in the facility.” Donors like John are the pillars that support our dreams and improve the lives of the people and communities we serve. “I look forward to supporting the next project to improve the quality of life at RRC,” John said. “I hope to inspire other people to give, too.” “Through John’s generosity, all RRC residents have cooler rooms on hot summer days and increased safety and security in the facility.” —Sister Kathleen Stadler, CSFN RRC’s Executive Director Give online at: giving.reshealth.org Our Donors are our pillars. Through their unyielding generosity, we are supported and lifted to new levels of excellence.
  • 6. 11 Our Caregivers are our foundation. Through their dedication, knowledge and skill, we are able to reach new heights in the care of the human body, mind and spirit. Dr. Mark Connolly, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Center for Cancer Care at Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, with his former patient Suzanne Zaccone. Give online at: giving.reshealth.org “Then I met Dr. Mark Connolly,” she continued. “I knew that I was with not only a medical genius and surgical artist, but a caregiver as well.” —Suzanne Zaccone Grateful patient and author What does a patient do when she has been diagnosed with breast cancer? “When the big C reared its ugly head for me, I responded by seeking five opinions,” said Suzanne Zaccone about choosing a doctor to help fight her battle. “Then I met Dr. Mark Connolly,” she said. “I knew that I was with not only a medical genius and surgical artist, but a caregiver as well.” Dr. Connolly is the Medical Director of the Center for Cancer Care at Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago. Suzanne was impressed when he answered two pages of questions with “extreme sensitivity” and put her “instantly at ease.” “He sealed the deal with a statement I will never forget. ‘Suzanne,’ he said, ‘I am certain that you would receive excellent care wherever you decide to go. All I can tell you is that I am a very good surgeon and I will take very good care of you.’” “That was the perfect answer for me.” Suzanne survived cancer and the experience changed how she sees the world. “It’s changed the person I am, the partner I am, the sister I am,” she said. “The daughter, friend, and aunt I am today.” Suzanne believes the Zaccone Family Foundation holds an obligation to give back when it can, as well as to honor people who make magic happen every day, people like Dr. Connolly. She recently did just that by making her first $50,000 gift to purchase new technology that identifies cancerous lymph nodes. This makes surgery more precise and less invasive for the patient. She intends to continue supporting the physician she is so grateful to. “I now am more able to recognize,” Suzanne concluded, “that we are all connected and everything has meaning if you just take the time to look for it.” Surviving cancer changes everything
  • 7. 13 “The most rewarding aspect of philanthropy is connecting donors’ passion to a cause worthy of their support,” said Ken Bauwens, Chair of the Resurrection Development Foundation Board of Directors. “I’ve seen first-hand how generous gifts have made a meaningful impact on those who need us most,” he added. Ken’s volunteer relationship with Saint Joseph Hospital began in 1993 when he was approached by Sister Theresa Peck, DC. Ken also worked closely for many years with Lee McDonnell, former head of fundraising at Saint Joseph Hospital. Now 19 years later, Ken has participated in 18 golf outings, attended 12 Monarch Balls and has contributed more than $350,000. His generosity is both personal and through his company, Jamerson & Bauwens Electrical Contractors, Inc, with his business partner Richard Jamerson. “Ken is one of the architects of our unique and remarkable structure of board members and volunteers,” said Amy Day, Vice President of Resurrection Development Foundation. “They have rolled up their sleeves and are connecting us to people in the community interested in supporting our cause. Ken is a stellar example of this. We are fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers that carry out our mission every day.” All our board members and volunteers are linked through their partnership and steadfast commitment. Together we can do more than we can ever do alone. Together we can change how healthcare is delivered in the communities we have the privilege of serving. Together we can do more than we can do alone “We are fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers that carry out our mission every day.” —Amy G. Day Vice President, Resurrection Development Foundation Ken Bauwens, Chairperson of the Resurrection Development Foundation Board of Directors, with Amy G. Day, Vice President, Resurrection Development Foundation. are our architects. Through their experience, commitment and vision, we are able to achieve our goals for a better future. Better together.
