This PowerPoint presentation presents and introduces Alla Prima--a painting technique used in watercolor but mostly oil painting. This PPT also includes tips and reminders on how to do a wet-on-wet technique.

WET ON WET OR ALLA PRIMA
⬤ Italian, meaning “First Attemp”
⬤ Also known as direct painting or au premier
coup
⬤ A technique in which layers of wet paint
are applied to previously administered
layers of wet paint.

Did you know?
It is used mostly in oil painting, the technique
requires a fast way of working, because the work has to be
finished before the first layers have dried.
Wet-on-wet painting has been practiced alongside
other techniques since the development of oil painting,
and was used by several of the major Early Netherlandish
Painters in parts of their pictures, such as Jan van Eyck in
the Arnolfini portrait, and Rogier van der Weyden.

The Arnolfini Portrait is a
1434 oil painting on oak
panel by the Early
Netherlandish painter Jan
van Eyck . It forms a full-
length double portrait,
believed to depict the Italian
merchant Giovanni di
Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife,
presumably in their
residence at the Flemish city
of Bruges.

Impressionists such as Claude Monet, post-
Impressionists such as Vincent van Gogh, realists such
as John Singer Sargent and Robert Henri and George
Bellows, Expressionists such as Chaïm Soutine, and
the Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning have in
different ways employed this technique, and it is still heavily
used by both figurative and non-figurative fine
artists. Artist Bob Ross employed the technique for his
show The Joy of Painting in order to produce complete
pieces in real time within a single episode.

Did you know?
Since the mid-19th century, the use of
commercially produced paints in small
collapsible tubes has facilitated an easily
accessible variety of colors to be used for
rapid and on-the-spot painting.
8. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Alla Prima is a direct method of
painting that is completed mostly in
one sitting. In older days, quite a bit
of planning went into it, but now a
days, its more of a direct approach
without prior planning involved.
9. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Wet on wet painting is a painting
technique in which new paint is applied to
previously applied paint that has not dried yet.
Wet on wet painting allows the painter to
continuously apply layers for corrosion
prevention rather than waiting for each
successive layer to dry. Wet on wet can also
help with mixing paints.
10. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Great care must be taken when performing
wet on wet painting. The painter must be aware of
the force he or she is using with the brush,
because too much pressure can cause the paint
to mix together or alter the layer underneath.
Also, the paint should generally be less viscous
the farther up in layers one goes. The use of
thinner and thinner paints also helps reduce the
risk of changing the layers underneath.
11. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Wet on wet painting is a great way to reduce
the time it takes to complete a painting job
compared to waiting for the outermost layer to
dry before beginning another layer. Wet on wet
painting can allow an applicator to finish painting
in one day or even in several hours depending on
the size of the object's surface area and the
number of layers being applied.
12. SLIDESMANIA.COM
In order to keep your paints from
turning to mud, remember these
points:
1. Make sure the paint you’re applying is
thicker (fatter) than the wet color
underneath.
13. SLIDESMANIA.COM
2. The thicker your paint, the lighter your
touch should be. Pushing the brush too
forcefully will blend the paint in with the
layer underneath. Dropping it in with a
light touch helps it stay on top rather
than blending in with the paint under it.

3. Don’t fuss! Once you’ve laid in a brush
stroke–just leave it. If you keep stroking
it instead of leaving it alone, it causes
your brush stroke to lose its definition.
Once you’ve set down a stroke, leave it
alone (unless it’s wrong—then carefully
scrape the paint off using a palette knife
and try again).

TIPS
1. Paint on a toned surface.
2. Start painting dark to
light.
3. Work large to small.
4. Remember that shadows
are not black.
5. Warm tones come
forward, cool tones
recede.
6. Stand while you paint.
7. Squint your eyes.
8. Edges are either hard or
soft.
9. Add highlights last.

Leonardo Boy Hidalgo
Alla prima was Hidalgo’s
technique through and
through. His subjects were
seascapes, still lifes, groves
and landscapes with
mountains, fields and rivers
devoid of people.

He also produced public
monuments in Heroes Hill and
Gen. Antonio Luna in La Union,
Dominican Saints and Martyrs at
the Central Library of the
University of Santo Tomas (UST)
and also religious sculptures
such as Christ Crucifixion at
Roxas District, Christ the King at
Baguilin, La Union and Sto.
Domingo at Cabuyao, Laguna.

I find spiritual beauty in all the things that I
paint. The innocence of a child's face, the
endless blue color of the sky, the smell of
flowers in the garden, the sound of
raindrops falling on the roof. These gives
joy in my heart, inspiration, and gratitude...
of being an artist
