This document discusses copper and silver ionization for water treatment. It provides information on the history of using copper and silver ions for water treatment by NASA in the 1960s. It then discusses the advantages of using copper and silver ions, which include being non-corrosive, destroying biofilm, and complementing temperature fluctuations. The document also provides specifications for different sized water treatment systems that use copper and silver ionization technology. It discusses monitoring, sustainability benefits, and provides case studies showing the effectiveness of copper and silver ionization in reducing legionella in various facilities.

Editor's Notes
For 25 years, ProEconomy have been treating water with copper and silver ionization. Copper and silver ionization has the most peer reviewed papers on efficacy. These papers have been compiled at http://copperandsilverassociation.com/ We’ve moved on from the Heath Robinson to a system that is manufactured externally in the UK to a sleek more effective product.
Copper and silver as metal elements have been used for centuries for their biocidal properties. Copper and silver ionisation was developed by Nasa in the 60’s to ensure safe drinking water in the Apollo space craft. In the 1990’s the biocide was used in wider environmental properties.
There are many features of CuAg ionisation and can been used across a wide array of sectors. ProEconomy treat many healthcare sites, care homes, food production (baxters soup in Scotland), the cooling towers at the European Space Agency in Holland, office spaces, schools and more recently low use high end residential due to it’s residual effect
ProEcconomy was founded in 1993 by Dr Birgitta Bedford who has a PhD in Legionella control. As a company we’ve evolved to become a market leader in CuAg ionisation with 200 sites across the UK and Europe
Unlike other modalities, CuAg ionisation is non corrosive to your pipework and seals
It has been proven to last longer than other modalities. In Vitru, (a lab environment) that the positively charged CuAg ions were still active for 12 weeks. Due to this residual effect, it’s been found the most effective legionella control modality.
As the ions don’t gas off over time and distance, it give a great consistent site wide dispersal. We have many large sites such as The John Radcliffe. Other modalities such as ClO1 may need ‘booster’ systems. It’s great for small and large sites where getting the biocide to the outlet can be tricky.
Describe biofilm. Samples can be taken for TVC’s showing biofilm in water systems and when treated by CuAg Ionisation these figures are reduced. By removing the biofilm (the breeding ground) from the pipework, the potential for problems is dramatically reduced.
The guidance recommends using temperature as the primary control modality. We have many sites who, despite reaching the desired temperatures have positive counts of legionella so look for a secondary control modality. The ions don’t gas off with increased temperatures so it’s great to ensure water system safety. As the desired temperatures can sometimes be hard to maintain in older sites with aging infrastructure, CuAg can be utilised to ensure the safety of the water system.
We have had some sites who have used CuAg ionisation to engineer out problems. As silver isn’t usually present in the water system, by treating the water and sampling ‘problem’ areas can be located. These can include deadlegs and biofilm filled valves. A hospital in Southampton were able to located a ‘faulty’ biofilm clogged saunders valve. Help identify little used outlets.
The ProEconomy Orca system is compliant with all necessary regulations The system is WRAS approved and ProEconomy are listed on the EHCA listed to sell both Cu and Ag as an elemental biocide for parts 2 (disinfection), 4 (food preparation), 5 (drinking water), 11 (cooling towers)
To ensure no trickle by of the system, a slow release ball valve is recommended to ensure the flow through the system. We offer difference sized, modular systems dependent on flow rates
The KB1 is our best selling system and can be used for a site such as Tower Bridge House, a care home or block within a hospital. The Copper and silver bars are sacrificial and will need replacing – on a KB1 running at 60lpm, the Cu are replaced every 3 months and Ag every 12 months. The KB1 has 1 silver and 1 copper pod.
The six pod manifold consists of 1 Ag and 5 Cu pods. On average the Ag needs replacing every 4 months and the Cu needs replacing every 3months. The costs of the metals are £130 for the Cu and £1,300 for the Ag. ProEconomy buy large amounts of metals to ensure the price of the metals remains the same over the contract period.
The Orca system is 100% recyclable. 1% of our sites run at below the recommended temperatures enabling them to save money. On a new build, the main cost savings is from having no TMV’s installed.
Scale forms on the electrode, especially in hard water areas. We visit the sites monthly to remove the scale and ensure efficacy of the systems. ProEconomy have systems installed country wide and have sites with a variety of pH levels. Water reports are sourced prior to installation to ensure the correct system and 3D insert is installed. Silver staining at 15% of our sites– removal with astonish cleaning paste. To ensure our 25 year clean record of having no cases of legionnaires, we visit the sites monthly.
Despite dosing the ClO2, deaths from legionnaires occurred. By installing an Orca system and working with the client, the site is now clear of legionella. Our client relations team visit site for the monthly management meetings and they’re happy with the results that are being achieved.
Following these fantastic results, another 8 systems have been purchased – ProEconomy now treat the entire of Windsor Castle. As a results of 5 years great work, we have now been awarded the Royal Warrant for Water Treatment Services.
