2. When we have done something good or achieved a goal that is outstanding and
remarkable to people, the first thing that comes to our mind is to celebrate it with the
people who are close to your or someone that has been part of achieving that goal
wherein you may receive a trophy, medal, a cake, a surprise celebration in a one event’s
place so that you can feel the excitement of reaching your plan. However, in the case of
Jose Rizal, he did not fully consider his awards way better but he acknowledged and
celebrated Juan Luna and Felix Resurrección Hildalgo’s as a tribute on June 25, year
1884 at the Banquet in Madrid to honor them since they won gold and silver medals, at
the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid. Felix Hidalgo won his silver medal for his
oil on canvas painting portraying two Christian virgins being stripped of their clothes by a
group of Romans while Luna’s oil on canvas painting which was the Spoliarium or also
called as El Expoliarium that represents soldiers dragging down fallen gladiators which
made him won a gold medal. I have realized the value of being acknowledged with the
thing you have done and having someone to celebrate it would be priceless.
By having Juna Luna and Felix Hidalgo’s achievements, it depicts the greatness if
the nations since on the beginning of Rizal’s speech, he mentioned the connection
between the Philippines and Spain that both took credit for their countrymen. The
celebration that Jose Rizal appointed serves as a tribute to the Filipino painters who gave
their time and effort to represent their nation. During his speech, Rizal pointed out that
both Luna and Hidalgo gave pride and honor to the Philippines where they were born and
for the country of Spain where it said that their greatness was polished. By expressing
their emotions towards painting, they can expose one’s cultural richness to helped shape
the national identity to influence the generations we have now and for the future. Filipino
painters like Luna and Hidalgo are educating the public about the culture and norms we
have that will inspire people to know more about our country.
On Rizal’s speech for Juan Luna’s work, he stated that it expressed a dark imagery
of suffering, mourn, pain, and defeat wherein it depicts inner political and socio-cultural
views that also came with reality as if it were also happening. On the other hand, Feliz x
3. Resurrección Hidalgo was honored for his “Virgenes Cristianas Expuestos al Populacho”
or The Christians Exposed to the People that made him won a silver medal for his paint
artwork. It portrays unfortunate women as virgins being led out, having one of the slaves
leans against the wall, eyes were fixed on the heavens with full agony. The work of
Hidalgo is an evident depiction of the Philippines under the hands of the Spanish
government rule where the half-stripped women represent our Filipino people who have
taken their dignity away.
During Rizal’s speech, he also mentioned about persuading a movement to the
Spanish government in accordance to his idea of having the Philippines to the land of
Spain. Jose Rizal wants to educate his countrymen about having same equal rights that
has been taken during those times. When Rizal decided to go abroad to reach his dreams,
he witnessed the unfair treatment from the friars or Spanish people towards the Filipinos
wherein they did not give any education and called them “indio”. As the toast goes by, he
reminded the Filipino youths regarding the reality happened during his stay in Spain that
causes him to fight using his intelligence in writing to expose the mistreatment doings of
the friars. What Jose Rizal was done during the celebration gave me hope that we should
give recognition to those people who gave their best to represent the country and
preserve the culture for the next generation. It is hard for Filipinos who have experienced
injustices and oppressions perpetrated by the abusive Spanish people and what else can
we do to stop the unfair treatment.
Rizal’s speech acknowledging Luna and Hidalgo’s masterpiece was a great way to
give pride to the Philippines as they have shown the importance of artwork by the use of
oil on canvas paintings. One of the most important thing that Rizal did during the toast
was applauding the efforts of young people who can make a great difference to preserve
the country’s culture and history. Like Juan Luna and Felix Hidalgo, I have realized that
we can also give pride to the nation by expressing ourselves using our talents and sense
of help. Rizal did not stop from believing that the youths are Philippine’s hope and can
contribute for the legacy he left that made a huge impact in our lives even up to this day.
