Claude Monet (1840-1926) was the leading member of the Impressionist group known for his use of color and light. He painted outdoors to capture visual sensations directly from nature. Monet is renowned for his water lily paintings and scenes of landscapes like the Thames, as well as his home and gardens in Giverny. In his later years, Monet began to lose his vision but continued painting, memorizing colors on his palette until he was legally blind.
