4. This is a support letter, from a conservator,
who has completed more than 30 historic
museum CAP surveys in the last 15 years and
who previously monitored the object care for
the State of Indiana’s ten sites.
5. Of all of the 50 or more collections, I have
reviewed in the Midwest, there is only one
other site who has painted backdrops.
6. Why they are important and should be preserved:
I reviewed one of two precious objects from an
overall and 7 detail photos sent to me as a possible
treatment.
7. The size and rolled nature of these backdrops
tends to bring neglect so very few have
survived from the turn of the century theatre
productions.
8. . Before mass media the play was a manner of
entertainment and education about current events
much like PBS today.
9. I believe the preservation of these treasures held in a
small museum and archives conveys the essential
character and experience of the state of Indiana

11. . These two backdrops are very significant in the heritage
of the Indiana community in which they are now held.

logos of businesses listed on it.

events continued until the WWI without much
interruption because of the way they conveyed
information to the public.
