- Good afternoon, my name is Jean Christophe Desconnets, i am coming from IRD french research institute i want to present a new contribution for the GEO community, i hope it will be useful This contribution is called Geocab portal, Geocab stands for Geo capacity Buidling portal capacity buidling on earth observation
- the main objectives of the geocab portal is to Provide informations that helps decision makers, policy makers and more generally earth observation products users to become more familiar with EO applications and opportunies and also make these informations freely accessible through a web resource facility
- Geocab portal answers to a critical needs for the earth observation community Many informations, materials have developed, collected or are collecting about capacity buiding resources such as (i.e. stakeholders' contacts, description of initiatives and activities, training material etc.) on different geographical areas and about different topics but until today it is too difficult to be aware of the existence of such material and really tricky to access to As the GEOSS portal, geocab portal want to be the main entry point to earth observation capacity building all over the world to help you to search and find Capacity Building materials
- The geocab portal is now available at www.geocab.org. this is a first operational version. Of course, your feedback are welcome. The portal allows any user to query the capacity buiding resource inventory. It is stored and accessible through interoperable catalog service. For instance, a typical query could be : “give me the organisation in south america which are involved in disaster monitoring ? “ The portal provides search and filtering features, like a e commerce site, to improve the search user experience. Others functionalities blocks are availables to add new resource, manage the inventory as well The site is responsive and could be browse using a mobile device
- Some details about the underlying design the inventory is based on a resource capacity building typology By "Capacity Building resource", we mean any element of interest that can help the development of knowledge (capacity building) in the field of Earth Observation. This element can be human, organizational, IT-related, methodological, technical. The main elements of this typology are : Organisation such as companies, governemental organisation, universities, school Access program as an initiative to access to earth observation product through specific conditions technical or methodological Document such as guideline or tutorial Product such as training, software and EO product
- Today, six hundred capacity building resources are described and accessibles through the search engine of geocab on left side, we present the resources availables, classified by resource type more than two hundred organisations are identified eighty eo product seventy training courses and thirty softwares on the right side, the same resources are classified by SBA
- the geocab portal implementation is a result of various contributions : Design and implementation around the portal were achieved by french institutions (IRD, Geomatys) Under the funding of european comission, the project geonetcab, eopower and iason, have started to identify capacity development opportunities and material on Earth observation inside and outside the GEO community. EC provides funding for implementing the portal as well GEO secretariat and CEOS, espacially (Working Group on Capacity Building and Data Democracy) play a main role to enrich the inventory and coordinate the project
- What are the benefits for the GEO community to use the geocab portal ? of course, make ... Be aware ... and finally have additional informations to coordinate ...
- to reach the objectives of geocab portal, the next steps are : Firstable make the portal sustainable. A MoU between the main actors is planned for the next year the objective is to have a formal framework to manage the portal and identify the role of each one in long term period the portal will be scalable if we want to spread (out ? à vérifier) the audience and keep a right quality of the inventory, for that, we have plan, for the next spring, to add monitoring and assessment modules (and define also more formally rules for adding resources) To enrich the content, we should make the portal interoperablle with the national, regional capacity building databases. To interconnect the geocab inventory with such databases. we are implementing a pilot architecture in the framework of EOPOWER project finally, in the near future, the geocab portal could be plug to the GEOSS SDI
- As you understand, the relevance of geocab portal is strongely link to the richness of inventory. There are already part of CEOS and GEO members who are jointed to populate activily the geocab portal To participate ask for an account to the geo secretariat or to the administrator
