5. ADDING INTEGERS WITH
LIKE SIGNS
ļ If the signs of the addends are the same, add the
absolute value of the addends and then copy the
common signs of the addends.
Example:
4 + 9 = 13 7 + 18 = 25
-4 + -9 = -13 -7 + - 18 = -25
7. ADDING INTEGERS WITH
UNLIKE SIGNS
ļ If the signs of the addends are the different, subtract
the smaller absolute value of the addends from the
larger one and copy the sign of the integer with the
greater absolute value.
Example:
12 + -7 = 12 ā| -7 |
= 12 - 7
= 5
8. ADDING INTEGERS WITH
UNLIKE SIGNS
ļ If the signs of the addends are the different, subtract
the smaller absolute value of the addends from the
larger one and copy the sign of the integer with the
greater absolute value.
Example:
-24 + 17 = -|24| ā| 17 |
= -24 - 17
= -7
9. ADDING INTEGERS WITH
UNLIKE SIGNS
Example:
10 + -6 = 4
10 - 6 = 4
Since 10 has the highest absolute value
and the sign is positive, therefore the
sum will be positive.
10. ADDING INTEGERS WITH
UNLIKE SIGNS
Example:
-10 + 6 = -4
10 - 6 = 4
Since 10 has the highest absolute value
and the sign is negative, therefore the
sum will be negative.
-
11. ADDING INTEGERS WITH
UNLIKE SIGNS
Example:
13 + -5 = 8
13 - 5 = 8
Since 13 has the highest absolute value
and the sign is positive, therefore the
sum will be positive.
12. ADDING INTEGERS WITH
UNLIKE SIGNS
Example:
-16 + 8 = -8
16 - 8 = 8
Since 16 has the highest absolute value
and the sign is negative, therefore the
sum will be negative.
