This is an assessable task for my students.
The aim of this task is to get students to complete writing an essay using the skill of research and academic writing which are covered in modules 1 and 2. This task should enable the students to use critical reading and writing skills to develop ideas, opinions based in a topic and critically use information collected to present their discussions/arguments in a logically, coherent manner.

• Student will write an explanatory essay using the PEEL structure.
Rationale

6. Essay outline
Use the outline below to guide you to write your essay
• Definition- Introductory paragraph: Define the topic of your essay and provide an
outline of the key - describe or identify what you are writing about (using words from the
question)
• College Readiness- what a student teacher is expected in a teacher training college
• Proficiency of English use- How well do students speak English; are there unsolved
issues needing improvement?
• Career preparedness- in terms of proficiency and confidence- How much can
understanding grammar contribute towards your carrier as a teacher?
• Confident communication- How can grammar contribute to building confidence in you
as a teacher?
• Priority-Focus areas: what would be your priority areas as a student teacher and when
you become a full-time classroom teacher?
7. Instruction.
You have a topic to research on to write your essay. Brainstorm ideas
on the topic and do some background reading to find out what other
people have said about your topic
• Organise your brainstormed ideas in logical sequence
• Write the essay following the PEEL structure. Your lecturer will explain
what a PEEL structure is.
• Apply academic writing mechanics which includes
paragraph development,
correct English grammar usage,
Verb tenses-subject verb agreement
choice of words,
sentence structuring,
punctuation and spelling
8. • Apply the different referencing skills where necessary to indicate sources
of information researched (this will also be explained by your lecturer)
• The last page of your essay should contain bibliography with correct listing
of references (in alphabetical order)
• Apply the writing processes systematically beginning with an outline,
• Proof read and edit
• Rewrite the first draft including the corrections you have made
• Correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
• Have someone check your work
• Submit your final work to your lecturer for marking
9. Presentation
• Students must use the steps mentioned above to write their essays.
• The essay must be written out neatly in black or blue ink or typed (on A4
size paper font arial 11)
• Final copy of the essay must be 1200 words in length
• Check to ensure you essay has the following features in order:
cover page (course title, essay title, name, class, year group, strand, lecturer name, date,
college name).
Acknowledgement separate page,
table of content page with page numbers
title, introduction and content of essay
• No highlighters and markers be used
• No unnecessary graphics
• Work produced must be original
