o For more than 100 years, Bugatti is
one of the most fascinating names
in automotive history.
o The myth of Bugatti was created
by Ettore Bugatti and his son
Jean Bugatti.
o In 1998, the legendary brand
became part of the

12. Founder History
o Born in Milano, Italy, 1881, Ettore was the son of Carlo
Bugatti who not only worked as a painter but also as a
silversmith, sculptor and woodworker.
o By the age of nineteen, Ettore Bugatti had just completed
building his first real car. He nailed it. His automobile
seemed almost futuristic.
o He made his first vehicle called Type 1.

13. o Type 1 featured a four speed gearbox, a four-cylinder
overhead-valve engine and a variety of engineering
improvements that only a gifted builder could have come
up with.

14. o In early 1909, with the financial support of banker de
Vizcaya, he opened his business in the town of Molsheim,
Germany.
Production Plant
o He borrowed additional funds from Darmstaedter Bank in
order to build five aircraft and ten automobiles.

16. o Between 1914 and 1918, the years of
WWI, Bugatti developed and produced
100p aircraft engines for both the
American and French governments.
During World War
o License fees for the engines gave Ettore the capital he
needed to begin production at the Molsheim plant when
the war ended.
o Bugatti increased production and hired more employees.12
17. o Ettore Bugatti contacted a lung infection and died in a
Paris military hospital on August 21, 1947.

o During the time that he led the Company, approximately
7,900 automobiles were produced. Many of them have
survived to present day, which attests to Ettore’s genius
and skill.
o He left behind a legacy of great contributions in the

o 60 red dots adorn the narrow white
outer edge of the Bugatti logo.
o Their meaning is speculated,
with some believing the dots
represent safety wires, which
appeared like lace patterns on
Bugatti models.

symbolizing that Ettore Bugatti
thought of his vehicles as “fine
jewels.”
o The black ‘EB’ emblem, of
course, represents Ettore
Bugatti as the founder of the

Carlo, who was very famous in Italy jewelry designer and
artist.

o Once it was created at the beginning of the company’s
history, it has never been changed, even when the brand
became the property of Volkswagen Groups.

of assembly so no gaskets were required, with safety
wires used instead, that is what red dot represents. 17
