Top 10 famous
countries in every
continent
By: Michaella N. Anez
ASIA
01
JAPAN
Japan is number 1 in the list because- Japan scores high
in all areas, and especially in “Entrepreneurship,”
“Movers,” “Power,” and “Cultural Influence.” Abe’s Japan
has been trying to come off two “lost decades,” a period of
sluggish economic growth that followed the burst of
multiple asset bubbles. Investors have taken notice.
Together with India, Japan’s equity markets have been
among the top Asian performing markets over the last five
years. JAPAN IS RANKED 1 IN ASIA, AND RANK 5 IN
WORLD RANK. CAPITAL OF JAPAN IS TOKYO AND
KYOTO.
02
SINGAPO
RE
Singapore receives high scores in “Movers,”
“Entrepreneurship,” “Cultural Influence” (Culturally
significant in terms of entertainment, fashionable, has an
influential culture, modern, prestigious, trendy), and “Open
for Business.” SINGAPORE RANKED 2 IN ASIA AND
RANKED 16 IN WORLD RANK. CAPITAL OF
SINGAPORE IS SINGAPORE. Singapore is a city, a
nation and a state..
03
CHINA
China scores high in four areas, “Power,” “Movers,”
“Heritage,” and “Entrepreneurship.” China’s high scores in
all three areas, especially in “Entrepreneurship” is an
encouraging sign for the future of the world’s second
largest economy. Entrepreneurship will help China make
the next leap forward, from imitation to innovation, which
will make its growth sustainable. CHINA RANKED 3 IN
ASIA AND RANKED 20 IN WORLD RANK. CAPITAL OF
CHINA IS BEIJING It was in Tian'anmen Square on
October 1st, 1949, that Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed
the establishment of the People's Republic of China, with
Beijing as its capital...
04
SOUTH
KOREA
South Korea receives high score in three areas,
“Entrepreneurship” (Open to the global economy,
educated population, entrepreneurial, innovative, provides
easy access to capital, skilled labor force, technological
expertise, transparent business practices, well-developed
infrastructure, rule of law), “Power,” and “Movers.” SOUTH
KOREA RANKED 2 IN ASIA AND RANKED 22 IN
WORLD RANK. SEOUL IS THE CAPITAL OF SOUTH
KOREA...
05
INDIA
India scores high on three criteria: “Movers,” “Heritage,”
and “Power” (A leader, economically influential, politically
influential, strong international alliances, strong military).
Meanwhile, India has maintained a stable political and
macroeconomic environment, reformed the tax system,
and fought corruption with de-monetization. These policies
have helped India’s economy outperform most emerging
markets in per capita GDP (Gross domestic product)
growth, while bringing inflation and unemployment down.
INDIA RANKED 5 IN ASIA AND RANKED 25 IN WORLD
RANK. NEW DELHI IS THE CAPITAL OF INDIA
06
THAILAN
D
Thailand scores high on four criteria: “Adventure,”
“Movers,” “Heritage” (Culturally accessible, has a rich
history, has great food, many cultural attractions), and
Open for Business. Still, Thailand has yet to find its old
glory days, remaining an emerging market. THAILAND
RANKED 6 IN ASIA AND RANKED 27 IN WORLD RANK.
BANGKOK IS THE CAPITAL OF THAILAND.
07
MALAYSI
A
Malaysia’s scoring profile is very similar to that of Vietnam.
That means that the country scores highly in the “Movers”
and “Open for Business” criteria, though that hasn’t helped
its equity markets, which have been underperforming
those of other Asian countries over the last five years.
MALAYSIA RANKED 7 IN ASIA AND RANKED 34 IN
WORLD RANK. Kuala Lumpur IS THE CAPITAL OF
MALAYSIA.
08
INDONESI
A
Like Vietnam, Indonesia receives high grades on
“Movers.” But it ranks highly on another criterion, “Open
for Business” (Bureaucratic, cheap manufacturing costs,
corruption, favorable tax environment, transparent
government practices). A business-friendly environment
and falling corruption and debt levels has helped
Indonesians catch up with other Asian countries and
become better off than Filipinos in per capita income in
recent years. INDONESIA RANKED 8 IN ASIA AND
RANKED 43 IN WORLD RANK. JAKARTA IS THE
CAPITAL OF INDONESIA
09
VIETNAM
Like the Philippines, Vietnam ranks average in most
criteria, but it ranks highly on “Movers,” which counts for
10% of the ranking, and includes such things as “Different,
distinctive, dynamic, unique,” which have fueled Vietnam’s
robust growth rates. Investors have taken notice. In the
last twelve months, Vietnam’s equity markets were among
the top performing markets of Asia. VIETNAM RANK 9 IN
ASIA AND RANKED 52 IN WORLD RANK. HANOI IS THE
CAPITAL OF VIETNAM
10
PHILIPPINE
S
While ranking average on most criteria, the Philippines is
ranking high on the “Adventure” criterion, which weighs for
3.7% of the score and includes such things as “friendly,
fun, pleasant climate, and scenic.” Apparently, Duterte’s
Philippines has maintained something from the glory days
of the 1960s, though it has been bypassed by one Asian
country after another in per capita GDP. (GROSS
DOMESTIC PRODUCT.) PHILIPPINES RANKED 10 IN
ASIA AND RANKED 45 IN WORLD RANK. MANILA IS
THE CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES
AFRICA
01
MOROCCO
The most visited country in Africa is Morocco. This Northern
African nation saw a whopping 12.3 million visitors in 2019,
making it the most visited country on the entire continent, The
culture of Morocco is sure to be a big drawcard, considering
there is nowhere in the world quite like it. The sights, sounds and
colors of the medina is enough to leave you mesmerized. Then
there’s the food, tagines, plenty of spice and endless sweet
pastries to finish off the day. Some of the highlights of Morocco
include Marrakesh, one of the most chaotic and charismatic
cities in the world. Then, of course, there is Fes, a historic city
with so much culture. RABAT IS THE CAPITAL OF MOROCCO
02
EGYPT
In 2019 there were an impressive 11.3 million visitors to Egypt,
making this the second most visited country in Africa. The main
draw cards in Egypt are of course the Egyptian pyramids, the
pharaoh’s tombs and the Luxor temple dating back thousands of
years. CAIRO IS THE CAPITAL OF EGYPT
03
SOUTH
AFRICA
This country comes in third on the list, but it is the front runner for
safari-goers. South Africa remains the most popular choice for a
safari, where you can spot the big five and spend some time out
in the wilderness. As for the total visitors? There were 10.5
million visitors to South Africa in 2019! CAPETOWN IS THE
CAPITAL OF SOUTH AFRICA ( PRETORIA, Bloemfontein)
04
TUNISIA
Next up is Tunisia, with 8.3 million visitors making their way to
the Northern African country in 2019. Tunisia is famous for its
ancient cities, the Saharan desert and its hot desert
temperatures. It has also been dubbed by some as the “next
Morocco”, for being slightly less under the radar and a more
affordable option just a short flight from many of Europe’s major
cities. TUNIS IS THE CAPITAL OF TUNISIA
05
ZIMBABWE
There are many reasons to visit Zimbabwe, but most of them
start with safari and end with the Victoria Falls. This landlocked
country in Southern Africa is still one of the most popular choices
for safari goers in search of the big five. The game viewing in
Zimbabwe is second to none, but the Victoria Falls are unlike any
other. As one of the world’s largest waterfalls, they extend some
1,708 meters in length.
06
Côte d’Ivoire
With beach resorts and rainforests as far as the eye can see, the
Côte d’Ivoire (also known as the Ivory Coast) is a popular choice,
especially for European travelers. With a French-colonial legacy,
the country has long been a favorite for travelers in search of the
sea, sun, and beautiful temperatures found in West Africa.
Yamoussoukro IS THE CAPITAL OF Côte d’Ivoire
07
UGANDA
Uganda has been living in the shadow of Rwanda, which has
quickly become the top choice for mountain gorilla viewing. But it
is here in Uganda where you can have the same experience for
much less, given the less-developed nature of the country. It is
(perhaps to contrary belief) safe to visit Uganda and visitors will
be delighted by how much raw beauty lies within the country
borders. KAMPALA IS THE CAPITAL OF UGNDA
08
KENYA
Over in East Africa, Kenya tops the list for the most visited
country. This is where one of the most famous films on the
continent, Out of Africa, was filmed. The Maasai Mara has
become one of the most popular choices for safari-goers.
NAIROBI IS THE CAPITAL OF KENYA
09
MAURITIUS
If you’re looking for a more tropical getaway when visiting Africa
or perhaps a destination to tag on to your safari, look no further
than Mauritius. Here you will find beautiful beaches, mountainous
treks and world class diving. PORT LOUIS IS THE CAPITAL OF
MAURITIUS
10
ESWANTINI
Landlocked in the center of South Africa, eSwatini (formerly
Swaziland) has long existed in the shadow of South Africa. This
rounds out our list of the most visited countries in Africa.
MBABANE AND LOBAMBA IS THE CAPITAL OF eSwatini.
NORTH
AMERICA
01
CANADA
At nearly 10 million square kilometers or over 3.8 million square
miles, Canada is the largest country in North America and the
second-largest country in the world (Russia is the first).
However, with a population of around 38 million people, it is only
the 37th most populous world country due to much of its northern
geography (80%) being uninhabitable. Canada's official
languages are English and French, with Quebec being the main
French-speaking Canadian province. OTTAWA IS THE CAPITAL
OF CANADA.
02
MEXICO
Twenty-two percent of North and Central American citizens (130
million people) live in the country of Mexico, making it the most
populous Spanish-speaking country in the world. Mexico borders
the Pacific Ocean on its west coast and the Gulf of Mexico on its
east coast. Its area is just under 2 million square kilometers or
761,600 square miles. MEXICO CITY IS THE CAPITAL OF
MEXICO
03
USA
In between Canada and Mexico lies the United States, where
over half of the entire North and Central American population
lives. The United States is home to over 330 million people and
spans an area of over 9 million square kilometers or nearly 3.8
million square miles. Although there is no official language in the
United States, 78% of its population speaks English, while a
significant minority (over 13%) speaks Spanish. WASHINGTON
DC IS THE CAPITAL OF USA
04
Antigua and
Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda is one country comprised of two main
islands and many smaller islands, and its total area is 442
square kilometers (170 square miles). Ninety-seven percent of
the country's population (under 100,000 people) lives on the
island of Antigua, and the majority of the population speaks
Antiguan and Barbudan Creole. Antigua and Barbuda are part of
the British Commonwealth, a voluntary association of states that
are now sovereign but primarily used to be British colonies.
SAINT. JOHN’S IS THE CAPITAL OF ANTIGUA AND
BARBUDA
05
BAHAMAS
The Bahamas, formally known as the Commonwealth of The
Bahamas, include over 700 islands and islets. Nearly 400,000
people live in The Bahamas, many of whom are descendants of
freed slaves after Britain abolished slavery in the early 19th
century. The total area of The Bahamas is 13,943 square
kilometers (5,358 square miles) and its official language is
English, as it is also a member of the British Commonwealth.
NASSAU IS THE CAPITAL OF BAHAMAS
06
BARBADOS
The easternmost island of the Caribbean is Barbados, which
stretches over 432 square kilometers or 167 square miles. Like
Antigua and Barbuda and The Bahamas, Barbados is also part
of the British Commonwealth. Over 250,000 people live in
Barbados, most of whom speak either English or Bajan Creole.
BRIDGETOWN IS THE CAPITAL OF BARBADOS
07
CUBA
The Republic of Cuba is the largest country in the Caribbean
region at 109,886 square kilometers (42,426 square miles). Over
11 million people live in Cuba, where the official language is
Spanish. Cuba was a Spanish colony until the Spanish-American
War, in which the United States occupied Cuba as a protectorate
until its Communist revolution of 1959. HAVANA IS THE
CAPITAL OF CUBA
08
DOMINICA
Even though only 0.01% of the North and Central American
population lives in Dominica, it's still quite popular for tourists to
visit. Dominica has just over 72,000 citizens living in 751 square
kilometers (290 square miles). Unlike the similarly-named
Dominican Republic, Dominica's official language is English, and
it is located close to Venezuela in South America. ROSEAU IS
THE CAPITAL OF DOMINICA.
09
DOMINICAN
REPUBLIC
Located on the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic
covers 48,671 square kilometers (18,704 square miles) of land. It
is home to nearly 11 million people, and it is the most ethnically
diverse country in the Caribbean. The official language of the
Dominican Republic is Spanish. SANTO DOMINGO IS THE
CAPITAL OF DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
10
GRENADA
Grenada is the second-smallest country in the Caribbean at 344
square kilometers or 134 square miles. The population of
Grenada is over 113,000 people, and the languages spoken
include English, Grenadian Creole and French. Grenada is a
member of the British Commonwealth and falls under the
Queen's authority. SAINT GEORGE’S IS THE CAPITAL OF
GRENADA
