Sustainable agriculture
An increasingly popular topic of
discussion among farmers, policymakers,
and the public.
One key aspect of sustainable agriculture
is the use of best management practices
(BMPs)
BMPs are defined as “Agricultural Best
Management Practices (BMPs) are
practical measures that producers
can take to reduce the amount of
fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste,
and other pollutants entering our
water resources.” UF/IFAS

Some of BMPs that can
be used in sustainable agriculture
Crop rotation:
Growing different crops in different
fields in different years. This helps
to build up soil fertility and reduce
the need for synthetic fertilizers.
Cover crops:
Planting cover crops such as
legumes (e.g., clover, alfalfa) can
help to improve soil health by
adding nitrogen and other
nutrients.

Conservation tillage:
Minimizing or eliminating the
disturbance of soils through tillage
practices such as no-till farming.
This helps to reduce erosion and
improve soil health.
Integrated pest management:
Using a variety of techniques to
manage pests, such as crop
rotation, biological control, and the
use of pest-resistant varieties. This
can help to reduce the need for
synthetic pesticides.

Why BMPs
The use of BMPs in sustainable
agriculture is crucial to protecting
and enhancing water quality, soil
health, and biodiversity.
Additionally, BMPs can help to
improve economic viability by
reducing production costs and
increasing crop yields.
