1. Fue Geoffrey de Monmouth quien estableció definitivamente la historia del nacimiento de
Arturo. El monarca literario es hijo del rey Uther Pendragon (en galés, 'Uther hijo del
Dragón'), quien deseaba a Igraine, esposa de Gorlois, duque de Tintagel, esto desató una
guerra entre ambos hombres. Uther hizo que el mago Merlín embrujase a la mujer para que,
cuando él entrase a sus aposentos, ella creyese que se trataba de su esposo. Uther,
aprovechando el engaño, mantiene relaciones sexuales con Igraine y engendra así un hijo:
Arturo. Gorlois muere en combate esa misma noche, y los sabios de Cornualles aconsejan
a Igraine que se case con el rey Uther.
Al nacer Arturo, Merlín se lo lleva y lo entrega a un noble, sir Héctor para que lo cuide y lo
críe como a su propio hijo, Kay. Según la mayoría de autores, Igraine y Gorlois habían
tenido a Morgause, Elaine y Morgana, hermanas mayores de Arturo. Las dos mayores
acabaron casándose con reyes britanos, pero la pequeña Morgana fue famosa por aprender
magia suficiente como para ser llamada Le Fay, es decir 'El Hada'. Algunos autores dicen
que aprendió su magia en la Isla de Ávalon, otros señalan que fue alumna del mismo Merlín
y la Dama del Lago, y otras versiones dicen que Morgana fue encerrada en un convento por
su nuevo padrastro, Uther, y que ahí aprendió su magia.

A los 18 años, Arturo va con sir Héctor y Kay a Londres, donde caballeros de toda Inglaterra
intentan sacar una espada de su prisión en un yunque que a la vez se encontraba prisionera
de un trozo de mármol(colocada por el Rey Uther). Se decía que quien la liberase sería el
rey de Inglaterra y el encargado de unificar todos los reinos de la isla (Uther había muerto
unos años antes). Infructuosamente, todos los caballeros intentaron extraer la espada, pero
es Arturo, sin ser caballero aún, quien logra liberarla, y le es revelada su verdadera
identidad. Con la resistencia de todos los presentes (en especial su cuñado Lot, esposo de
Morgause), es proclamado rey, sin embargo, poco a poco todos lo aceptan y Arturo jura
impartir justicia a todos los hombres de Inglaterra sin tener en cuenta su posición social. En
estos primeros días de su reinado los autores suelen situar el incesto de Arturo y una de sus
medio hermanas, del que nacería Mordred. Algunos autores lo suelen presentar como hijo
de Arturo con Morgana Le Fay, pero Mallory y la Vulgata decían que Arturo se había
acostado no con Morgana, sino con otra hermana, Morgause (En las primeras versiones
Mordred es tan solo el hijo de una hermana de Arturo, solo es su sobrino, pero los autores
fueron alterando el árbol genealógico con los siglos).
Poco después Arturo pierde su espada durante una batalla. El mago Merlín lo acompañó a
un lago en cuyo fondo había un castillo en el cual vivía una hechicera llamada Nimue, la
Dama del Lago. Esta mujer guardaba una espada maravillosa, Excalibur. Arturo le pidió la
espada y Nimue se la regaló. Merlín observó la espada mágica de Excalibur: «Guardad bien
esta espada» le advirtió al rey, «puesto que mientras la llevéis no perderéis nada de sangre,
pero un día llegará una mujer en la que confiáis y os la robará».
Camelot y la búsqueda del Santo Grial Editar
Ya en su castillo de Camelot, Arturo se rodea de los caballeros más valientes y honestos:
Lanzarote (hijo adoptivo de Nimue), Perceval (hijo de Pellinore), Gawain (hijo del rey Lot y

2. Morgause) y otros, junto con quienes funda la Orden de la Mesa Redonda. Gran Bretaña
goza, entonces, de doce años de paz. Se casó con Ginebra, hija del rey de Cameliard, y
fueron felices hasta que Lanzarote llegó a Camelot y él y la reina se enamoraron en secreto.
Los caballeros de Arturo, en busca del Santo Grial, combatían en bosques sombríos y
castillos contra duendes, dragones y otras bestias, y regresaban a Camelot a contar sus
aventuras en la mesa redonda donde se reunían.
Arturo fue ayudado por Merlín hasta que éste desapareció junto a su amada Nimue y fue
encerrado por ella en una colina hueca. La medio hermana de Arturo, Morgana, aprovechó
esta situación para robar la vaina encantada de Excalibur y arrojarla al mar. Morgana actuó
así con Arturo debido al matrimonio que su hermano le había obligado contraer con el rey
Uriens, y porque Ginebra, la prometida de Arturo, había expulsado de la corte a Guiamor, su
amante.
Durante la búsqueda del Santo Grial, todo apunta a que sir Lanzarote iba a encontrar el
sacro objeto, pero su amor por la reina no lo hizo digno de tal premio. Cuando pasó una
noche en el castillo de Corbenic, donde vivía el Rey que custodiaba el Grial, la hija de este
rey, Elaine, se enamoró de Lanzarote, y mediante la magia, adquirió el aspecto de Ginebra
para yacer con él. De ésta unión nacería Galahad, uno de los caballeros destinado a
encontrar el Grial.

Mordred, hijo de Arturo y Morgana, se entera del idilio de Ginebra y Lanzarote y lo denuncia
ante Arturo, que se ve obligado a condenar a la hoguera a su esposa, según las leyes de la
época. Lanzarote salva a la reina y huye con ella a Francia, aunque luego se ve obligado a
devolvérsela a Arturo.
Arturo sale en persecución de Lanzarote y deja el reino a cargo de su hijo Mordred, quien se
apodera del trono e intenta seducir a la reina Ginebra. Al regreso de Arturo, él y sus
caballeros deben luchar para recuperar el trono, en la Batalla de Camlann. Arturo se
enfrenta a su hijo, al que atraviesa con su lanza. Pero Mordred, antes de morir, hiere
fatalmente a Arturo, y muere.
La historia cuenta que Morgana llevó el cuerpo de Arturo en una barca hasta las orillas de
Ávalon junto con otras reinas-hadas más, que podían haber sido Igraine, Elaine, la Dama
del Lago (a la cual le fue devuelta Excalibur), la Reina de Gales del Norte, la Reina de las

It was Geoffrey of Monmouth who definitively established the history of Arthur's birth. The
literary monarch is the son of King Uther Pendragon (in Welsh, 'Uther son of the Dragon'),
who wished to Igraine, wife of Gorlois, Duke of Tintagel, this untied a war between both men.
Uther had the magician Merlin bewitch the woman so that when he entered her chambers,
she would believe that it was her husband. Uther, taking advantage of the deception,
maintains sexual relations with Igraine and thus begets a son: Arturo. Gorlois dies in combat
that very night, and the wise men of Cornwall advise Igraine to marry King Uther.
At the birth of Arturo, Merlin takes it and hands it to a nobleman, Sir Hector, to take care of it
and raise him as his own son, Kay. According to most authors, Igraine and Gorlois had had
Morgause, Elaine, and Morgana, Arthur's older sisters. The two majors ended up marrying
British kings, but little Morgan was famous for learning enough magic to be called Le Fay,
that is, 'The Fairy'. Some authors say that she learned her magic on the Island of Avalon,
others point out that she was a pupil of the same Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, and other
versions say that Morgana was locked up in a convent by her new stepfather, Uther, and
that she learned her Magic.

At age 18, Arturo goes with Sir Hector and Kay to London, where knights from all over
England try to draw a sword from their prison on an anvil that was at the same time prisoner
of a piece of marble (placed by King Uther). It was said that the liberator would be the king of
England and the one in charge of unifying all the kingdoms of the island (Uther had died a
few years before). Unsuccessfully, all the knights tried to extract the sword, but it is Arthur,
without being a knight yet, who manages to free her, and is revealed his true identity. With
the resistance of all present (especially his brother-in-law Lot, husband of Morgause), is
proclaimed king, however, little by little all accept it and Arturo swears to impart justice to all
the men of England without taking into account their social position . In these early days of
his reign the authors usually place the incest of Arthur and one of his half sisters, from which
Mordred was born. Some authors usually present him as Arthur's son with Morgana Le Fay,
but Mallory and the Vulgate said that Arthur had slept not with Morgan, but with another
sister, Morgause (In early versions Mordred is only the son of a sister of Arturo, is only his
nephew, but the authors were altering the genealogical tree with the centuries).
Shortly afterwards Arthur loses his sword during a battle. The magician Merlin accompanied
him to a lake at the bottom of which was a castle in which a sorceress named Nimue, the
Lady of the Lake, lived. This woman kept a wonderful sword, Excalibur. Arturo asked for the
sword and Nimue gave it to him. Merlin observed the magic sword of Excalibur: "Keep this
sword well," he warned the king, "for as long as you carry it you will not lose any blood, but
one day a woman will come and trust you and steal it."

4. Already in his castle of Camelot, Arturo surrounds himself with the most brave and honest
knights: Lanzarote (adopted son of Nimue), Perceval (son of Pellinore), Gawain (son of King
Lot and Morgause) and others, Order of the Round Table. Great Britain then enjoys twelve
years of peace. He married Geneva, daughter of the king of Cameliard, and they were happy
until Lanzarote reached Camelot and he and the queen secretly fell in love.
Arthur's knights, searching for the Holy Grail, fought in shady forests and castles against
goblins, dragons and other beasts, and returned to Camelot to tell their adventures at the
round table where they met.
Arturo was aided by Merlin until this one disappeared next to his beloved Nimue and was
locked by her in a hollow hill. Arturo's half sister, Morgana, took advantage of this situation to
steal Excalibur's enchanted sheath and throw it into the sea. Morgana acted thus with Arturo
because of the marriage her brother had forced her to contract with King Uriens, and
because Arturo's fiancée, Geneva, had expelled Guiamor, her lover, from the court.
During the search for the Holy Grail, everything points to Sir Lancelot's finding the sacred
object, but his love for the queen did not make him worthy of such a prize. When he spent a
night in the castle of Corbenic, where the King who guarded the Grail lived, the daughter of
this king, Elaine, fell in love with Lanzarote, and through magic, he acquired the aspect of
Geneva to lie with him. From this union would be born Galahad, one of the knights destined
to find the Grail.

Mordred, son of Arturo and Morgana, learns of the idyll of Geneva and Lanzarote and
denounces him to Arturo, who is forced to condemn his wife to the bonfire, according to the
laws of the time. Lanzarote saves the queen and flee with her to France, but then is forced to
return it to Arthur.
Arturo goes in pursuit of Lanzarote and leaves the kingdom in charge of its son Mordred,
who seizes of the throne and tries to seduce to the queen Geneva. Upon Arturo's return, he
and his knights must fight to reclaim the throne, at the Battle of Camlann. Arturo confronts
his son, whom he crosses with his spear. But Mordred, before dying, fatally wounded Arthur,
and dies.
