The document discusses the history and future of building facades. It summarizes key developments such as the Crystal Palace in 1850, the Bauhaus in 1920, and more recent innovations in materials, construction techniques, and integrated building systems. The workshop then outlines ongoing research projects at universities in Delft, Detmold, Luzern, and elsewhere focused on developing advanced, high-performance facades through approaches like digital fabrication, energy generation and storage, and multidisciplinary design.

26. facade heating / cooling panel
15-08-2004
Imagined by Marcel Bilow
Keywords: decentralized, heatin/cooling, lightness, installations, concrete
More Info:
To avoid the classical heating units in front of the glass surfaces these
unglazed units should be used as heating / cooling surfaces. The developed
facade panels are formed of fiber reinforced concrete which is imbedded
with textile.
They are used as load bearing construction of the panels and can be
inserted into the facade framework. The surface oriented towards the room
is inlaid with meadows of capillary tubes which heat in summer and cool in
winter. The use of fiber reinforced concrete provides a good heat
conduction as well as stability.

Custom Joint
Imagined by: Marcel Bilow
Keywords:
Integrated digital ankles give the freedom to connect
every structure possible with printed joints. These
structures can be used for temporary buildings (tents,
stands, pavilions) or for load bearing structures in
building construction.
Materials can be high-tech plastic-composites or
metals.

DMF Spider
Imagined by: Ulrich Knaack, Holger Strauss
Keywords:

Alternative kinds of applications can be micro ducts,
lenses and fans or sun shading devices that fold like
bat’s wings.
