Editor's Notes

  1. Hello and thank you for joining me as we explore WebQuests. My name is Elisabeth Cassinari and I bring this presentation to you as part of the requirements of SPED 8001 at Fitchburg State University, August 2023.
  2. In learning about WebQuests, we will methodically cover: What a webquest is specifically. Who webquests are appropriate for How to use a Webquest Then, you will get to explore some WebQuests in action. Finally, I will share with you some of the benefits of WebQuests as well as some Resources to help you learn more about WebQuests or how to locate, purchase, or create your own.
  3. A WebQuest is a lesson. It can be as long as an entire unit, or it can house one lesson within that unit, or one cumulative project to finish out a unit. It can cover any topic from academics like math and geography, to life skills and continuing adult education. WebQuests are developed by those instructors seeking to immerse students in the process of their own learning by having them interact with information differently - and with their peers differently. Too, there is the technology. Most, if not all of the information that a student will be using --will be found using the preselected resources provided by the instructor.
  4. Webquests? They truly are for everyone. From the time a child is able to access and use a learning tablet, Chromebook, or computer they have the ability to access and use a WebQuest. WebQuests are extremely diverse and the content of any webquest can be adapted and differentiated for any given learner. WebQuests are only as limited as those that create them.
  5. Every teacher needs a hook. A way to draw students into their learning. The Introduction of a WebQuest is exactly that. A hook. The big question. The why of the quest. For this, open-ended questions are best. Questions that do not have simple fact based responses and moreover, questions that set the stage for the roles that students will play in their quest. Get students excited as they become the investigators of a crime scene, the judges and jury members of a trial. The task is what students will be doing. Essentially, what are the performance criteria that students need to meet, what are the expectations, and what shape or form must their results echo? The Task, in other words is the end goal or goals of the WebQuest. And Objectives and goals need clear steps in order for students to get there. This is where the process comes in. It is here where students will understand what activities they need to complete, clear explanations and guidance to get through those steps. Resources are the backbone to a WebQuest. This is the listing of every website that an instructor wants a student to use, as well any non-web resources and any physical materials needed to meet the specified objectives and goals. Then there is the evaluative component to the WebQuest. Students should know what to expect here as well. Will they be graded independent of any group mates? Or, will the evaluation be a team effort? Indeed, what do they specifically need to do in order to meet the learning objectives. It is here, within the evaluative component that instructors also plan for students who are not meeting target goals and provide plans for additional differentiation or remediation. Lastly, there is the reflective conclusion to the WebQuest.
