Why on earth, or in hell, was Mysliveček attracted by this infamous couple, or simply accidental pair Adam & Eve who had to go along since they were the only ones, and Eve was created from one of Adam’s ribs for Adam to have a companion, meaning a play mate. And on they went, creating the whole humanity in their incestuous and in-breeding fornication, blessed by the snake, and condemned, not even by God who is absent, but by his angels. Then what can we discover that could salvage the myth from oblivion and ethical rejection? Not much since the only excuse they have is love, but this love is nothing but physical appeal and physical consumption. The two angels, one of Misericordia, and the other of Giustizia, in Italian in the libretto, are supposed to represent God in his/its dual essence, his/its fundamentally binary perversion, punishing what he/it forgives and forgiving what he/it condemns. The music could save the whole myth of this infernal couple born from mud, or clay if you prefer, same thing anyway, earth and soil, as Adamo’s name says in Hebrew since it is a shortened version of the earth Adamah. A couple of arias are very good, a duet of Adamo and Eva is good too, because the two voices are contrasted enough, though Eva would have been better as a soprano. The two angels are wrongly impersonated as sopranos. They should have been countertenors since we do not have castratos anymore. Mozart liked this composer, and that’s normal since this incestuous and in-breeding tale could only titillate Mozart’s passions or emotions. He was not a free mason for nothing at all: “No Gods, and No Masters!” and that means “No rules!” because grammar and syntax are fascist, as a French Philosopher said somewhere around 1968 in the inner yard of La Sorbonne.

GARDELLINO – ORATORIO A 4 VOCI – 2018-2019
The three Abrahamic religions, in chronological order Judaism, Christianity, and Islam always
have to come back to the myth of Adam and Eve that states the whole of humanity today is the
result of an enormous inbreeding between one man and one woman. This is so absurd that not so
many people really worked on the hypothesis. Some painters with some sexy images, some
sculptors with some sexy statues, and some literary people with some metaphorical stories on the
simple line of these two fictional characters. And faith has nothing to do with it. It is the unhealthiest
story I know, with brothers and sisters practicing incest, not out of choice but only by obligation.
Imagine the state of humanity after three generations of this incestuous inbreeding. Luckily, God
gave them everything, but inbreeding led them to betray everything moral, and all ethical behavior,
and how could they be different, how could they know reason and morals when they were forced to
do what is absolutely against nature? Most animals in the wild would not do it. Imagine the
amplification of this incest after Noah and his ark in which he only took one male and one female of
each animal species!
Joszef Mysliveček does a very good job with this myth. And yet I do not feel it as clearly as I
would have liked to. Adamo is a tenor. Why not? Eve is a mezzo-soprano, and there I disagree.
She should have been a soprano, and a high-pitched soprano at that. The two angels are soprani,
and that is not what I would have liked, in this ancient 18th
-century Italy. Angels are not sexually
specified. So, they should have been castrati with slightly different voices, similar and yet one more
aerial and the other slightly more raucous, and in the modern world two countertenors would have
been perfect. When you listen without following the words in the booklet, you can hardly find out
just by listening who is Eva, who is the Angelo di Giustizia, and who is the Angelo di Misericordia.
And worst of all, there is no God in this Eden, and that is missing. In the Biblical myth of the original
sin, there is no God either, but that makes God a pure phantasm and the angels are the only
voices of this God who is nothing but an empty spot. A conspiracy of the angels. But who created
these angels?

3. The structure is also plain. Long recitatives alternating with arias and a couple of times a
duetto, and that’s about all. That is a minimal dramatic situation with minimal psychology, minimal
actors and actresses, and minimal dramatic play. Maybe the score has some suggestions, but we
do not have the score, just the words. A Minimalist oratorio long before any minimalist music.
What saves this oratorio is a couple of arias that are exquisitely beautiful. Angelo di
Misericordia’s aria, track 06, or Adamo’s aria, track 10. But the vision of Eva as the original sinner
who accepts her fate to be punished with child-bearing forever in aeternam Deo, in saecula
saeculorum, and nothing can be said about the naïve and slightly not-very-swift-in-the-mind
Adamo. The apex of this more than traditional, definitely fundamentalist, vision is provided by the
duet of the two angels, track 15.
Justice: Neither cruel severity
Nor haughty pride exists in God.
Mercy: Neither spineless fear
Nor weakness exists in God.
Justice: A steadfast avenger,
Mercy: A loving forgiver
Both Angels: Who displays his pity
Justice: Goodness condemns the guilty.
Mercy: Goodness sets the guilty free.
Both Angels: Its divine aspects
Are wrath and pardon.
It would be nice to see it produced on a stage, but the dramatic dimension will be hard to
invent with only, four actors-singers. Even the snake is only hearsay.

Les trois religions abrahamiques, par ordre chronologique, le judaïsme, le christianisme et
l'islam, doivent toujours revenir au mythe d'Adam et Ève selon lequel l'humanité entière est
aujourd'hui le résultat d'une énorme consanguinité entre un homme et une femme. C’est tellement
absurde que peu de gens ont vraiment travaillé sur cette hypothèse. Des peintres avec des images
sexy, des sculpteurs avec des statues sexy, des lettrés avec des histoires métaphoriques sur la
simple ligne de ces deux personnages de fiction. Et la foi n’a rien à voir là-dedans. C’est l’histoire
la plus malsaine que je connaisse, avec des frères et sœurs pratiquant l’inceste, non par choix
mais uniquement par obligation. Imaginez l’état de l’humanité après trois générations de cette
consanguinité incestueuse. Heureusement, Dieu leur a tout donné, mais la consanguinité les a
amenés à trahir tout ce qui est moral et tout comportement éthique, et comment pourraient-ils être
différents, comment pourraient-ils connaître la raison et la morale alors qu'ils étaient forcés de faire
ce qui est absolument contre nature. La plupart des animaux sauvages ne le feraient pas. Et
imaginez l'amplification de cet inceste après Noé et son arche dans laquelle il n'a pris qu'un mâle
et une femelle de chaque espèce animale !
Josef Mysliveček fait un très bon travail avec ce mythe. Et pourtant, je ne le ressens pas aussi
clairement que je l’aurais souhaité. Adamo est un ténor. Pourquoi pas? Eve est une
mezzosoprano, et là je ne suis pas d'accord. Elle aurait dû être une soprano, et une soprano aiguë
en plus. Les deux anges sont des soprani, et ce n'est pas ce que j'aurais souhaité, dans cette Italie
ancienne du XVIIIe siècle. Les anges ne sont pas sexuellement spécifiés. Il aurait donc fallu qu'ils
soient des castrats avec des voix légèrement différentes, similaires et pourtant l'une plus aérienne
et l'autre légèrement plus rauque, et dans le monde moderne deux contre-ténors auraient été
parfaits. Lorsque vous écoutez sans suivre les paroles du livret, vous pouvez difficilement
découvrir simplement en écoutant qui est Eva, qui est l'Angelo di Giustizia, qui est l'Angelo di

4. Misericordia. Et le pire, c’est qu’il n’y a pas de Dieu dans cet Eden, et cela manque. Dans le mythe
biblique du péché originel, il n'y a pas non plus de Dieu, mais cela fait de Dieu un pur fantasme et
les anges sont les seules voix de ce Dieu qui n'est qu'une case vide. Une conspiration des anges.
Mais qui a créé ces anges ?
La structure est également simple. De longs recitativi alternant avec des arias et quelques fois
un duetto, et c'est à peu près tout. C’est une situation dramatique minimale avec un minimum de
psychologie, un minimum d’acteurs et d’actrices, un minimum de jeu dramatique. Peut-être que la
partition contient quelques suggestions, mais nous n’avons pas la partition, juste les mots. Un
oratorio minimaliste bien avant toute musique minimaliste.
Ce qui sauve cet oratorio, ce sont quelques airs d’une beauté exquise. L'air de l'Angelo di
Misericordia, piste 06, ou l'air d'Adamo, piste 10. Mais la vision d'Eva en tant que pécheresse
originelle qui accepte son sort d'être punie dans la souffrance de la naissance des enfants pour
toujours in aeternam Deo, in saecula saeculorum, et rien ne peut être dit à propos du naïf et un
peu pas très vif d'esprit Adamo. Le summum de cette vision plus que traditionnelle, résolument
fondamentaliste, est fourni par le duo des deux anges, piste 15.
Justice : Ni cruelle sévérité

Ni faiblesse en Dieu.
Justice : Un vengeur inébranlable,
Miséricorde : Un pardonneur aimant
Les deux anges : Qui affiche sa pitié

Sont la colère et le pardon.
Ce serait bien de le voir monté sur scène, cet oratorio, mais la dimension dramatique sera
difficile à inventer avec seulement quatre acteurs-chanteurs. Même le serpent n'est que ouï-dire.
