His father was a hardworking businessman who insisted his sons support themselves financially. Nkem remembers his father denying him assistance, saying he was wasteful. His wife Sandra interrupts his thoughts, calling out to him. They married three years ago after she graduated. While her beauty initially drew him to her, he discovered they had much in common, including enjoying luxury and disliking work. Sandra is partly to blame for his financial issues, as she spends much and causes him to ask his father for money.
2. Nkem woke up very early the next day. It was the day after his father’s burial. He had
been very busy during the weeks preceding the burial. Being the first child in a family
of three boys he was the one incharge of almost everything being done for the burial.
He felt a slight headache but managed to brush it off. Dragging his feet slowly from the
bed across the room to the bathroom he thought of his father. His father was a hard
man, very principled businessman who always insisted on hard work and felt his sons
needed to work for their own money without leaning on him for support.
3. As he splashed water on his face, he remembered all the moments he had
approached his father for financial assistance and he turned him down claiming he was
extravagant and wasteful. How did he expect him to get a white collar job? The thought
of himself doing “9 to 5” made him angry. His mates were busy driving posh cars, living
in luxury apartments, taking expensive trips abroad and managing their fathers’
companies while he was here living from hand to mouth meanwhile his father owned
chains of businesses, different properties in choice areas of the country and a fleet of
cars.
4. “Baby”, He heard Sandra call out to him. The voice seemed to be coming from a
distance. A tap on his shoulder jolted him out of his early morning reverie. Sandra is
his wife. They got married 3 years ago shortly after she graduated from the university.
Her beauty was what drew him to her but when they started dating he discovered she
was a lot like him in all ramifications.
Sandra loved the good life. She enjoyed shopping and hated work. She was the
perfect housewife. She could spend a whole day making a list of things to buy ranging
from clothes to jewelleries and every nice thing you could think of. He loved her and
hated her for the same reason. How funny! She was partly to blame for his financial
issues. She spent so much and which always saw him crawling back to his father
asking for money. It’s not as if he was better anyway. Sadly, he shook his head.
