STEM and Its
Importance to the
Future of K-12
Education

STEM, an acronym that stands for Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math. Also
sometimes called STEAM, the A standing for
arts. STEM gives educators the opportunity to
show students how important STEM is and
how it can be found in our everyday lives.
Chris Woods, a STEM teacher and host of the
STEM Everyday Podcast explained to us why
STEM is so important for the future of K-12
education.

When teachers hear "STEM" they think about
robotics, 3D printers, and all kinds of fancy
technology. Chris's interest in STEM came from
the urge to become a voice to help teachers
understand how they can teach STEM in
different ways without needing fancy or
expensive technology.

When Chris would be home on the
weekends, working on home
projects, he started noticing that all
the different tasks he was doing
had elements of science,
technology, engineering, and
math.

So, he started sharing these tasks
with his students and fellow
teachers via Twitter (@DailySTEM)
to get them excited about STEM,
show how they are used in
everyday life, and give teachers
ideas of how to create lessons
around STEM in their classrooms.
One of Chris’s favorite ways to engage his
students is by giving them an idea and
building on it later when it comes to
application. An example he gave was
watching a video on how a cook makes rice.
This video will show the cook using ratios and
converting units like they would in math or
science.

STEM has the potential to play a prominent
role in the development of the next generation
of students.

Many industries have large elements of
STEM that they use that we might not
even realize. Chris wants STEM to be a
topic that is a part of everyday lives and
become so apparent that it is a part of
everything.
Chris explains how he is excited about the
future of STEM and to see how it unfolds but he
has his concerns as well. While there are so
many great resources, kits, and programs out
there to use, students need to be able to see
that STEM is not just a place they go to once or
twice a week.

Some schools are implementing STEM classes
just because the schools around them are.
While this may seem like a great way to get
started, schools and educators need to be
passionate about STEM to indulge in the full
potential of these topics.

Chris thinks STEM should be part of every
aspect of learning. With the help of each other,
STEM education can become something much
more than just a subject in school.

The Importance of STEM to K-12 Education

  • 2. © 2020 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 2 STEM, an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Also sometimes called STEAM, the A standing for arts. STEM gives educators the opportunity to show students how important STEM is and how it can be found in our everyday lives.
  • 3. Chris Woods, a STEM teacher and host of the STEM Everyday Podcast explained to us why STEM is so important for the future of K-12 education. © 2020 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 3
  • 4. When teachers hear "STEM" they think about robotics, 3D printers, and all kinds of fancy technology. Chris's interest in STEM came from the urge to become a voice to help teachers understand how they can teach STEM in different ways without needing fancy or expensive technology. © 2020 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 4
  • 5. © 2019 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 5 When Chris would be home on the weekends, working on home projects, he started noticing that all the different tasks he was doing had elements of science, technology, engineering, and math.
  • 6. © 2019 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 6 So, he started sharing these tasks with his students and fellow teachers via Twitter (@DailySTEM) to get them excited about STEM, show how they are used in everyday life, and give teachers ideas of how to create lessons around STEM in their classrooms.
  • 7. One of Chris’s favorite ways to engage his students is by giving them an idea and building on it later when it comes to application. An example he gave was watching a video on how a cook makes rice.   • 10. © 2020 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 10 Many industries have large elements of STEM that they use that we might not even realize. Chris wants STEM to be a topic that is a part of everyday lives and become so apparent that it is a part of everything.
  • 11. Chris explains how he is excited about the future of STEM and to see how it unfolds but he has his concerns as well. While there are so many great resources, kits, and programs out there to use, students need to be able to see that STEM is not just a place they go to once or twice a week. © 2020 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 11
  • 12. Some schools are implementing STEM classes just because the schools around them are. While this may seem like a great way to get started, schools and educators need to be passionate about STEM to indulge in the full potential of these topics. © 2020 Dyknow – Proprietary and Confidential | 12
