Padartha Vijnana means the science which deals with the substances in the universe, its relationship with the living being in terms of their properties, functions; methods of understanding them etc.
Generally the subject Padartha Vigyan is considered as tough in the field of Ayurveda. But, it is the most useful subject than any other in Ayurveda.
The topics dealt in it are the fundamental concepts of Ayurveda on which entire chikitsa stands.
Understanding the elements in the universe is mandatory before studying the body. In this book, the subject matter is discussed with the help of different darśana and other shastras which are correlated with Ayurveda System.
Hence this will be a good guide for the BAMS students; as it includes all the subject matters in according to the revised syllabus prescribed by NCISM, 2021.

✤ 1. It can not be included in Pṛthvi as Gandha and Sparsa are present in
Prthvi.
✤ 2. It can not be included in Jala as Rasa šita sparsa sukla Rūpa are present in
Jala bhūta.
✤ 3. It can not be included in tejas as the Usna Sparsa, bhaswara swarupa are
present in tejas.

✤ 4. As the attributes ever mobility, Sparsa are not available in Tamsa, it can
not be included in Väyu bhūta.
✤ 5. As Akāśa is a rūpahina Dravya, as rupa does not exist in Akāśa it can not
be included in Akasa.
✤ 6. It can not be included in Atma, Mana and Käla as the above are rūpa hina
Dravyas.

5. Concept and description
✤ Some Acaryas opine that Tamas is an independent Dravya with
significance.
✤ But some acaryas refuted (or contradicted) the above view and did not
accept Tama as additional Dravya.
✤ They say that as dravyatwa is absent in Tama, it can not be a Dravya.
Absence of lighting only is Tama. It is not reasonable that absence of Tama
is lighting. Prakasa is the form of Teja. Teja s perceivable through
cakṣurindriya and twagindriya. The ac tions of Teja, i.c. Dahana and pacana
are perceivable through di rect perception. Tama is perceivable only
through cakṣurindriya.
