There are a lot of cowboy aesthetics business's out there who are quite happy to have someone with no professional qualifications launch in with their needle to inject your botox or fillers without the full professional training in facial anatomy needed to do the job right! …. In our humble opinion, beware places using therapists without professional training as this is commonly a cost cutting measure.....Unqualified therapists can also do laser hair removal, freeze sprays, and giving fillers. For more on other cost cutting tricks some less reputable practices might use check out our blog posts on http://nextlevelaesthetics.tumblr.com
A lot of Botox and filler clinics out there have a strategy of advertising a really really really low prices (often below what reputable places can buy botox for) …. But there is a catch. Not only does almost nobody get as little botox as required for the tiny touchup price they are quoting at the bottom of their range, but when you get to the checkout you may well discover a list of 52 other charges (!hyperbole) you weren’t expecting these include: prescription fee / dispensing fee/ private prescription processing fee / consultation fee / admin fee / fee for analgesia / fee for follow up appointment .....the list goes on! No reputable supplier will do this! To see this in a bit more detail check out the post on the subject on our blog. www.nextlevelaesthetics.com/news
Does your botox therapist know how your botox was shipped? This is one place that patients don’t know about the risk of corner cutting and which they’re never likely to find out about. Botox is not stable at room temperature and gradually breaks down (technical term is ‘denatures’) becoming less potent over time. When a reputable firm like Next Level Aesthetics orders its botox we order it delivered in foil lined zipping cold storage bags which are shipped on ice (with the ice even signed and dated showing when it was made up). Of course services like this charge a premium. Places that offer you botox for prices starting from £ 52 have to be making their money somewhere, right? ….. Well in addition to the often hidden charges slapped on top of it sending botox through regular mail rather than couriers that ship on ice is one way of making up the difference. At Next Level Aesthetics our botox is actually *flown* in on ice as we are based on the Isle of Man and, being an Island, transportation is a major cost. That said, as we want the best for our patients we pay that premium....bargain basement centres may not do so!
Ok So you’ve heard of Botox, but what on earth is Dysport? Yep many of your clients won’t have heard of it either. If you look at the image (from the manufacturer) you’ll see that it’s effectively being used in a lot of the same places botox often is….. Well Botox® is actually a registered trademark for Botulinum Toxin Type A, and it isn’t actually the only preparation of Botulinum Toxin Type A on the market. Think using ‘hoover’ instead of ‘vaccum cleaner’ or ‘immodium’ instead of ‘loperamide’ .... Well dysport is the other kid on the block. It’s a bit cheaper from a supply price point of view but a most therapists are not as used to using it, it spreads differently, gets constituted differently, and so is more hastle for them to make up....and sometimes needs ordered especially as they don’t need to carry stock many charge more for it rather than less.... There’s one reason you might want ot use dysport. At the 14 day mark it performs much the same as botox, but the onset is faster. At Next Level Aesthetics we keep a stock of it and I tend to only propose it where someone has a major life event (eg a Wedding) coming up then suddenly tell me they’re getting married in three to four days. Botox doesn’t stand a chance of having had an effect in time, dysport on the other hand is the very thing!
OK, This applies to the UK. not wanting to offend anyone here. I know a fair few dentists to do botox on the side and many of the skills are transferrable….
*BUT* Botox is not dentistry and the General Dental Council’s Scope of Practice Committee has forbidden that dentists identify themselves as dentists when giving the treatment. The ASA also forbids dentists from advertising on the same literature (or part of a website) as dental services. All promotional activities must be separate.
That said as a general unskilled therapist can undertake botox there’s nothing to stop dentists doing it in an unqualified ‘therapist’ capacity… provided they don’t identify themselves as dentists (whislt in the UK they are not ‘doctors’ and do not generally get this title here, they are surgeons and so are Mr in the way that a surgeon is Mr that said they’re not allowed to present this way to patients when doing it).
Anyway a last note, it’s becoming more common and I’d suggest if you’re not going to pay to go to a Medical Doctor with a Special Interest in Medical Aesthetics then a dentist is not a bad choice given many of their skills will transfer....It is however like going to an opthalmologist (an eye doctor) for your kidney problem. Yes many of his skills will transfer, but they’re acting outwith their area of specialisation. Still a much better bet than a ’lay’ therapist.
No reference to being a dentist should be made on the advertising literature and services must be advertised completely separately to dental services, oh and, as demonstrated when the ASA went to court over the issue, when providing botox in the UK nobody should represent themselves as ‘doctor’ unless they hold a medical degree or PhD regardless of where they got their dental degree (some jurisdictions award dentists, and vets the courtesy title of doctor - even if that is normal practice where they got their degree it is forbidden to use it in botox advertising without a PhD or a medical degree….and even PhDs must be careful not to misrepresent or mislead people into thinking they are medical doctors). This only applies in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey (and perhaps british overseas terrirtories?) It is likely to be different in your region.
These before and after shots are from america. They’re banned in advertising to patients in the UK and the crown dependencies (as this would be making a claim). That said they’re not banned from celebrity gossip magazines as every woman will attest! Also in this modern world patients will just google and find US images.
If you find a site over here showing before after shots though it shows considerable contempt for advertising rules.
Another photo like this from the US by way of example.
You won’t see any such photos on patient parts of www.nextlevelaesthetics.com for good reasons!
Always beware if they won’t let you leave without getting treatment! Vote with your feet!!
Just for fun the amounts we use are trace amount.
