Fishing Gear any form of equipment, implement, tool or
mechanical device used to catch, collect or harvest fish.
Fishermen in many parts of Bangladesh catch fish with their
hands. In rural areas, in seasonal waters or beels, during winter,
people can be usually seen fishing with different traditional gears
while some even do so without any gear

4. Classification of fishing gears
1. Active gears :Active gears capture is generally based on an
aimed chase of the target species (e.g. trawls, dredges)
2. Passive gears: The capture of fish is generally based on
movement of the target species towards the gear (e.g. traps)

Drift/ Gill nets: these are rectangular enmeshing fish by gills. To the
head ropes are attached floats while the ground ropes may or may not
have any sinkers fastened to them. During flood in river, the nets drift
with the current , ascending and descending fish trying to force their
ways through the nets and being caught.

Seine nets: These are rectangular with floats attached at suitable
intervals to their head ropes. The floats are of bamboo, sola or wood.
The ground ropes may or may not have any sinker. These nets are
extensively used for encircling stretches of water for catching fish by
manipulating the head and ground ropes.

• Drag nets/ Push nets: These nets are rectangular in out line and
are used for dragging tanks and other water areas.

• Dip nets/ Lift nets: These are small fishing nets made of
bamboo frame and possessing long, handles, these are let
down in water for capturing fish.

• Cast nets: These nets thrown and collected without waithing time,
conical in outline and their lower edges are turned uo to form
pockets. To the free edges of the pockets are fixed iron weights.
Ex: Bachari Jal, Khepla Jal, Rekh Jal.

16. Traps
Generally, there are 26 types of traps are seen in Bangladesh
Bhair: Physical structure: Long box like trap with a door extending
from its base to its apex.Made of split bamboo sticks tied with creeper
or cane.Small opening at the apex for collecting fish. Used in shallow
portion of the Beel.
Size: Height: 3-4 feet, Length: 2-3 feet
, Width: 1.5-2.5 feet, gap between two
bamboo sticks: 1-4 cm.
Catch composition: Usually large
sized fishes, such as Carpio, Rui, Catla,
Boal, Taki, Shol, Gazar, Shal, Baim etc. 16

Kholsun: Physical structure: Rectangular box shaped. Made of split
bamboo tied with jute rope or cane. Kholsun consists of two doors
from its apex for fish opening. Small opening present at its apex for
collect the fish.

3 to 4 feet, Width: 0.3 to 0.5 feet,
Catch composition: Mainly small
fishes, Baim, Koi, Punti, Tengra,
Kaski, Mola, Moya, Chapila,

Bitte: Physical structure: Basket shaped, made of split bamboo
with two or three entrances. There is an opening on the trap for
collecting fish.

Upper opening smaller and used for collecting trapped fishes.

20. Banar Ghop: Physical structure: Used as barricade or trap.Made
of split bamboo, the bamboo pieces are tied with one another either
by coconut fiber, nylon or by iron wires.

Catch composition: Mainly large
sized species including Rui,
Bighead carp, Silver carp are the

21. Wounding nets/ spears
Aro: It posses a fork with three simple points, The fork is
attached to a long bamboo. It is used in Jessor and Khulna for
killing fish like Boal, Shol, Gajar, Carps and others.

Teta: The fork of tenta is detachable and end in 3-13 points. The
points are burbed. It is almost used in all districts of the
province. In some districts it is called Ator. Target species are
Boal ,Shoal, Taki, Bele.

Pacha konch: It consist of 6-15 split of bamboo pieces. The
pointed ends of the bamboo splits are covered with sharp and
pointed iron cap to increase the efficiency.

EK kata: It posses a single detachable barbed point. The spear is
attached to the shaft by a cord. It is called Reksha in Noakhali.

Shat phala: It is a spear with a detachable iron fork
terminating in seven points. The fork is attached to a shaft by
a cord. It is used in Dhaka, Faridpur, Jessor, Noakhali, Pabna,
Rangpur most.

26. Line gears/ hooks
Fishing by means of hand or long lines with baited hooks is known
as line fishing. A fishing line is a cord used or made for angling.
Important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material and
weight.

29. Conclusion
In Bangladesh, different types of gears are available but few
gears are used commercially and traditionally. Most of the fishing
gear are hand-crafted and made according to the capture
composition whether depending on opportunity of acclimate.
Some nets or gears are actually means of capturing certain
species. During rainy when the water current in the river so
strong nets are out of commission and found to be quite effective.
