Nashville Public Library
Adult Services Committee Meeting
June 2016
"Today, we’re talking about mindful boundaries at the public reference desk.
When I first began in reference at the Nashville Public Library after working as a temporary circulation assistant, I started at the reference desk at Bordeaux with Marva Bryant. While it was closed, I practiced at the Southeast branch with Jenny Lane and also at Bellevue with K’Lani Green. On March 5th of last year, after working in public reference for five weeks, I noted to myself that, “Public reference work can be really taxing to the spirit. What are the resources and policies in place to minimize that?”
7. 1. Find sustainable solutions
2. Support each other

Thank you for coming and sitting with me.
And wellness is a new focus of Metro and NPL, I thought we might something that they do before some meetings at Google.
I also believe it can be a handy tool to help us make it through long days at the reference desk.
Each of the videos is a 3 to 5 minute quick centering practice.
If everyone is OK, we will try one now:

Then let's get ready for meeting!
Welcome to Ed Pike
We’re really glad you are able to come out to see us.
Today, we’re talking about boundaries at the reference desk.
When I first began in reference after working as a temporary circulation assistant, I started at the reference desk at Bordeaux with Marva Bryant. While it was closed, I practiced at the Southeast branch with Jenny Lane and also at Bellevue with K’Lani Green. On March 5th of last year, after working in public reference for five weeks, I noted to myself that, “Reference is taxing to the spirit. What are the resources and policies in place to minimize that?”

Since then, I have been interested in support for adult reference.
Of the age groups in the library, (e.g. Teen, Children and adults), “adult” reference takes up the largest segment catering to adults aged 19 to 99 and beyond.
So it is my hope that we will be able to think of some great ways to support each other at the reference desk and come up with some tools and tricks that we can use in order to be more effective in our most common interactions.
The aim of this meeting is to share how clear boundaries can make a big difference into our comfort level at the desk and maximize our ability to be present and focused on patron needs.
Now I’ve introduced myself and my impetus for this meeting.
I would like us to introduce ourselves and share a little if we are comfortable.
