Donor transparency is increasing funding for indigenous peoples' and local communities' land and resource rights. In 2022, $494 million was funded, a $172 million increase from 2021. However, direct funding to indigenous peoples and local communities needs to increase, as it was only $8.1 million in 2022, going to 39 recipients compared to 27 in 2021. Barriers to direct funding need to be addressed. When funding flows through partners, over 50% is influenced or controlled by indigenous peoples and local communities. The Shandia Principles call for donors to recognize indigenous peoples as rights-holders, support their own priorities and aspirations, enhance sustainability of funding, strengthen partnerships through trust and collaboration, and streamline procedures.
