Charlie Chaplin Essay
Charlie Chaplin
"It is absolutely no exaggeration to say that for the greatest part of this century Charlie Chaplin was the most recognizable human being on the
planet," (Burr, 20). Chaplin did everything in show business; he was an actor, director, screenwriter, producer and composer, (Reader's Companion
157). He was the ideal rags to riches role model that every American dreamed of becoming. Charlie Chaplin revolutionized American show business
and inspired Americans to follow their dreams because he was proof that even underdogs could make it to the top. Charles Spencer Chaplin had a very
eventful life. He was born in London on the 16th of April, 1889, (Douglas np) to two music hall performers; Charles and Hannah Chaplin. (Reader's

His final marriage was to 18 year old Oona O'Neil in 1943. Charles and Oona had eight children together: Geraldine, Michael, Victoria, Josephine,
Eugene, Jane, Annette–Emilie and Christopher, (imdb.com). Charles Chaplin died in his sleep on Christmas day 1977, he was 88 years old,
(imdb.com). Charles' not so perfect personal life lead him to have a faulty education. Charles never excelled in school but he had a great talent for the
film industry. Chaplin was in spotlight when he was five years old; he was forced on stage to cover for his mother who was hitting the wrong notes
while performing, (Reader's Companion 157).
Charles dropped out of school when he was ten to work as a mime on the British circuit; he could barely read and write. Since his mother was unfit
to raise him he was in and out of state poorhouses and orphanages, (Douglas np). With Charles not in school and working throughout his childhood
he was influenced by many things. Many factors in Chaplin's life inspired him to become the great actor that we all know and love today. His
mother was the most influential person in his life, she always encouraged Charles to do his best and to reach his goals, (Dic. Of World Bio. 653).
When he was 19 he and his brother joined Fred Karno's touring stage company, (imdb.com). He went to America with Fred Karno's speechless
comedians in 1910, which was when he decided that he belonged in the New York spotlight,

Charlie Chaplin Essay
Charlie Chaplin did not use sound to communicate to the audience in his movies. Despite the fact that there was no spoken language, his movies were
sensational and the audiences loved them. Chaplin was thought of as cinema's first genius and has been called the single most–influential artist in the
history of motion pictures. I am researching Charlie Chaplin to learn how he became a sensational comedian and one of the best actors of all time.
Chaplin is considered as one of the most pivotal stars of the early days of Hollywood. He lived an interesting life both in his films and behind the
camera. Charlie Chaplin is most recognized as an icon of the silent film era, often associated with his popular "Little...show more content...
When he turned fourteen, he got a break when he was asked to act in a legitimate stage show as "Billy" in "Sherlock Holmes". Following that gig,
at the age of eighteen, he started a career as a comedian in vaudeville ("Charles Chaplin" 100). In 1912 the troupe traveled to New York, where he
was a featured player with the Fred Karno Repertoire Company. Mack Sennet, founder of Keystone Studios, saw him perform one night and decided
to take him on at the Keystone Studio and offered Charlie a motion picture contract. Chaplin agreed to appear before the cameras at the termination of
his vaudeville commitments in November of 1913 ("Biography of Charlie Chaplin"). He did not know it, but this would be the beginning of his
legendary career.
Chaplin's initial salary was one–hundred and fifty dollars a week. In February of 1914, he debuted on the big screen starring in "Making a Living".
Surprisingly, the film was considered bad at the time of its release ("Biography for Charles Chaplin"). His next film, however, changed his career
forever. It was called "Kid Auto Races at Venice". The film starred Chaplin as a homeless man who appeared undersized and undernourished. He was
nicknamed "the Little Tramp" or "the Little Fellow" by audiences ("Biography for Charles Chaplin" ; "Charlie Chaplin" 376).

Essay on charlie chaplin
What a little tramp! Charlie Chaplin, who brought laughter to millions worldwide as the silent "Little Tramp" clown. Born in East Street,
Walworth, London on 16 April, 1889, Charles
Spencer Chaplin was the son of a music hall singer and his wife. Charlie Chaplin's parents divorced early in his life, with his father providing little to
no support, either financial or otherwise, leaving his mother to support them as best she could. Chaplin's mother Hannah was the brightest spot in
Charlie's childhood; formerly an actress on stage, she had lost her ability to perform, and managed to earn a subsistence living for herself, Charlie, and
Charlie's older half–brother Sidney by sewing. She was an integral part of Charlie's young...show more content...
Charlie was a lifelong pacifist, but he was also a realist who saw that the aggression of the Axis powers had to be stopped. In many ways, Chaplin was
politically naive –– such as speaking at fund raisers for the Communist USSR, whom Chaplin simply saw as our allies in the fight. And by suggesting
that America immediately open a two front war to help our "friends" in the Soviet Union. These were some of the reasons that the
government began keeping tabs on the immigrant film maker. Although he worked for all of these years in America, he maintained his
British citizenship, and had no intention of becoming an American citizen.
Moreover, due to the false rumors that Chaplin was a communist or communist sympathizer, as well as an organized protest by various unions resulting
in theaters refusing to show his films. Charlie took a vacation to England, wanting to show his new wife and children his native country. Upon leaving
the territorial waters of the United States of America, Charlie
Chaplin received a cable, informing him that the State Department had rescinded his reentry permit –– effectively locking him out of the country as an
undesirable alien. There were many reasons for this –– Chaplin's unorthodox political views, the false accusation that he was a
Communist, and not least of all, money. There would have been an attempt by the federal government to seize Chaplin's assets, which were enormous.
However, his wife Oona returned to
