Slide 2: Gas prices drive up sales tax revenue in state   (03-25) 04:00 PDT Sacramento - --   While motorists fume over the skyrocketing cost of gasoline, state officials say the extra sales tax  revenue from high prices at the pump is proving to be a boon as California faces an $8 billion  budget deficit. And lawmakers are likely to tussle in coming weeks over how to spend the unexpected revenue.  Sales tax receipts from gasoline have been rising sharply over the past five years - from $2.1 billion in 2003, when a gallon of regular unleaded cost an average of $1.88, to $3.8 billion in 2007,  when the same gallon cost $3.12, according to the state Board of Equalization. If gas hits an average of $4 a gallon this year - not an unrealistic possibility considering that fuel  prices rose to an average of $3.63 on Monday - state and local governments could collect nearly $5  billion in sales tax on gasoline.   SF Gate

Slide 3: Inspector Arrested In Wake Of Crane Collapse POSTED: 2:59 pm EDT March 20, 2008   NEW YORK -- A city inspector has been arrested for lying about checking on a construction crane just 11 days  before it collapsed, killing seven people in a dense neighborhood, officials said Thursday.  Edward Marquette, 46, was arrested on charges of falsifying business records and offering a false instrument for  filing, buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster said.  "We will not tolerate this kind of behavior at the Department of Buildings," Lancaster said at a news conference. "I  do not and will not tolerate any misconduct in my department."  Marquette, who earns $52,283 a year as an inspector in the department's division of cranes and derricks, was  arrested while being questioned Wednesday night, said Barbara Thompson, spokeswoman for the Manhattan  district attorney.  Dressed casually in a black leather jacket, Marquette did not say anything during his arraignment in state Supreme  Court and was released without bail. If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison. His lawyer, Kate Moguletscu,  had no comment.  The Department of Buildings said Marquette conducted 423 inspections at 76 constructions sites, mostly in  Manhattan, over the past six months.  The deadly accident occurred last Saturday when a crane about 20 stories tall broke away from an apartment tower  under construction and toppled over, killing six construction workers and a visitor in town for St. Patrick's Day. Two  dozen people were injured.

Slide 4: We're all doomed! 40 years from global catastrophe - and there's NOTHING we can do about it, says climate change expert      The weather forecast for this holiday weekend is wildly unsettled. We had better get used to it.  According to the climate change scientist James Lovelock, this is the beginning of the end of a peaceful phase in  evolution.  By 2040, the world population of more than six billion will have been culled by floods, drought and famine.  The people of Southern Europe, as well as South-East Asia, will be fighting their way into countries such as  Canada, Australia and Britain.  We will, he says, have to set up encampments in this country, like those established for the hundreds of thousands  of refugees displaced by the conflict in East Africa.  Lovelock believes the subsequent ethnic tensions could lead to civil war.  Crackpot or visionary, the fact is that more and more people are paying attention to Lovelock, and that he, himself,  supports the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - the influential group who shared the Nobel  Peace Prize with former American vice president Al Gore for their campaigns on global warming.    Daily Mail

This is what the world's first Time Machine may look like Never heard of "traversable wormholes?"  Well, soon you might start hearing about them, as the world's most powerful particle accelerator becomes functional this spring -  unleashing forces, capable of distorting not only space (just like gravity distorts space around Earth), but also TIME. CERN's Large Hadron Collider is set to become the very first time machine in history.  According to the research published by Irina Arefieva and Igor Volovich, "in general relativity, a time-like curve in space-time will run  from past to future. But in some space-times the curves can intersect themselves, giving a closed-like curve, which is interpreted as a  time machine - which suggests the possibility of time travel" Two proton beams travel in opposite directions and collide at four points along the way - replicating the Big Bang conditions of "cosmic  plasma", a mysterious almost liquid state, which occurred before quarks had cooled off enough to allow atoms to form together. The  Large Hadron Collider will force quarks to break free of their bonds, the matter substance to unravel - to recreate the original "cosmic  plasma", and to reconstruct Big Bang conditions. (hopefully on a much smaller scale)  Here are some quick facts: - 20-year work-in-progress - A team of 7,000 physicists from more than 80 nations  - 27 kilometers in circumference, 175 meters underground - facilitating head-on collision of protons, traveling very near the speed-of-light - each tunnel is big enough to run a train through it. - temperatures generated: more than 1000,000 times hotter than the sun's core - superconducting magnets are cooled to a temperature colder than in deep space 

Slide 6: Jack Whittaker, West Virginia’s most famous and infamous lottery winner, has won again.    03/24/2008    The West Virginia Lottery confirms that Whittaker, who won the nearly $315 million Powerball game in 2002,  recently won a Powerball prize, but for a much, much smaller amount.  The Lottery says Whittaker claimed a $10,000 prize Jan. 25th with a ticket he bought at a convenience store in  Kenova.     “He matched four numbers plus the Powerball number for a $10,000 prize,” said Lottery Spokeswoman Nancy  Bulla.  “It was a $5 Easy Pick ticket for the Jan. 9, drawing.”  Whittaker has been the subject of intense media coverage since he won the Powerball six years ago, opting to take  a lump-sum payment that came out to $93 million after taxes.  He has been in trouble with the law several times,  been sued repeatedly and suffered personal tragedies including the death of his granddaughter who suffered from  drug addiction.  “Whittaker’s struggles with drinking, gambling and philandering became public, and the tales of his transgressions  were retold with relish,” wrote the Associated Press in a 2007 profile of Whittaker.   “I don’t have any friends,” Whittaker told the AP last year.  “Every friend that I’ve had, practically, has wanted to  borrow money or something and of course, once they borrow money from you, you can’t be friends anymore.”

A 21-year-old Salt Lake City woman on Monday was named by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)  as 2008's "sexiest vegetarian" -- beating out a field of hundreds. Shona Barnthouse was named the winner after beating out 15 other finalists.  As a reward, she and a friend will  travel to Maui, Hawaii for a week-long vacation. A dancer and model, Shona only recently became a vegetarian but has found it to be a life-changing decision.  She  has noticed a boost in daily energy and muscle tone, she says.  An animal-lover for as long as she can remember,  Shona says she always helps a creature in need and refuses to wear leather. "Shona is a big winner in anybody's book," said PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich.  "Her smart move to go  vegetarian has improved her health and helped stop animal suffering. "Being sexy is just one more perk," he added.

Slide 8: Man auctions his life  A man in Australia is auctioning his life -- his house, his job, his clothes and his friends -- on eBay,  after his marriage broke up, saying he wants to start a new life. "It's time to move. A completely fresh start. I want to see where life takes me," Ian Usher, 44, told  Australian television on Tuesday from Perth in Western Australia state. Usher said he was auctioning his life as "a package" with his house in Perth valued at around  A$420,000 (US$385,000). "Hi there, my name is Ian Usher, and I have had enough of my life! I don't want it any more! You  can have it if you like!," reads his Web site www.alife4sale.com, which has a link to eBay for  bidders. Usher said his life auction, which starts on June 22, included not only his house, a car, a  motorbike, a jet ski and a spa, but also an introduction to "great friends" and a job at a rug shop in  Perth for a trial two-week period. "When it's over, I will just walk out the front door, take my wallet, my passport and start a new life,"  he said. Usher said his ex-wife had heard of his auction. "Her last comment was, 'it seems a bit mental to me'," he said.

Slide 10: Questionable Straw Shape Upsets Mother ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A mother says the straws she bought for her three-year-old daughter were shaped like  a male sex organ.Andrea Bailey says she went shopping at the Ashland Wal-Mart on Thursday, February 28th, and  bought a package of fun straws for her three 3-year-old daughter, Ashlynn.Bailey says Ashlynn came in and used  one shaped like a heart.  A couple others in the package, though, were shaped like something different.“There are two of them that are  shaped like the male private area,” said Bailey. “I called Wal-Mart and they very rude with me about it. They acted  like I was lying, like I was making it all up. You know, I would never make something up like that, especially about  my little girl. But, that's just how they treated me and it’s just not right.” A communications representative at Wal-Mart corporate headquarters e-mailed us a response. "At Wal-Mart we  take customer questions and concerns seriously,” said the spokesperson in a statement. “After being contacted on  this matter, Wal-Mart pulled the product in question from our shelves and is investigating the claim.  Of course, our customer is welcome to return the item for a refund, if they would like."Wal-Mart informed us the  straws came from a manufacturer called Eagle Marks Corporation. We could not obtain contact information for the  company from our own search or Wal-Mart officials.Andrea Bailey says her concern is not the $1.69 she paid for the  straws, but what might happen to other families with kids a little older than Ashlynn. We searched at three other Wal-Mart stories in three different states last week, and found no fun straws on any  shelves.A Wal-Mart corporate communications spokesperson told us the regional stores were aware of the flap, and  Wal-Mart was reviewing the product.

The 27-year-old granddaughter of the late Queensland politician Russ Hinze has been dating Texan billionaire Jim Clark, the founder  of Netscape, for two-and-a-half years.  The pair were tight-lipped about their relationship until now, but Hinze has told The Australian Women's Weekly she was instantly  attracted to the thrice-married entrepreneur.  "I never thought I was going to date an older man when I first met him," Ms Hinze told the magazine, which is on sale tomorrow.  "To me, it was different to hang out with someone with something to say that was so interesting and important and who was truly,  incredibly intelligent.  "He's handsome and has so much charisma - and he's so funny."  Ms Hinze is a former Sports Illustrated covergirl and recently became the face of fashion label Sportscraft.  The couple have also been spied together relaxing on Mr Clark's yacht Athena, the largest privately-owned yacht in the world.  Ms Hinze said Mr Clark was a regular guy, despite being reportedly worth $US1.1 billion ($A1.2 billion).  "He's an incredible man and I just love him." 

Slide 12: Australian building his own Stonehenge Tue Mar 25, 6:24 AM ET  PERTH, Australia - Pagans and druids, mark your calendars and book your airplane tickets. An Australian  entrepreneur hopes to open a Stonehenge replica by the Dec. 21 solstice, just in time for New Age revelers.      "I'm doing it because I can," said Ross Smith, the former owner of a successful microbrewery business who plans to  build the monument on his property in Western Australia. "Nowhere in the world has a complete Stonehenge been  built." The $1.26 million project, to be called The Henge, will include 101 granite stones arranged in an inner and outer  circle, a central altar, and will span 110 feet. "I've studied plans of the original and that's what The Henge will look like," Smith said. Unlike the original Stonehenge, guests will be encouraged to touch and play around the new monument, which will  also have an interpretive center and a children's playground. Smith called The Henge "a business venture." An entry fee will be charged and it will be hired out for weddings and  other events. He hopes his replica will attract 200,000 to 300,000 tourists per year to the Margaret River region, already  renowned for fine wine, chocolate and cheese. A small team of quarry workers in Western Australia has spent the past five months drilling and blasting the stones  into shape, and Smith expects the attraction will be open by Dec. 21, the summer solstice in the southern  hemisphere.

Slide 13: Starmageddon: As thousands of starfish wash up on our beaches, what is to blame for destroying one of nature's little marvels? They lay in their thousands, covering the beach in a carpet of pink and orange. Some were curled up,  their spiny feet pointing towards the sky. Others lay flat where they had been washed up by the tide.  All were dead.  If the collective noun for a normal group of starfish is a constellation, then this pitiful sight on the Kent  coastline was more like a galaxy.  Mass starfish strandings, or "wrecks", are not uncommon in Britain and typically happen once a year.  But the scale of death visited upon the beaches of southern England in the past few weeks has stunned  conservationists and prompted a major investigation into what could be killing so many marine animals.  Daily Mail

Slide 14: Teacher Grinds To A Fault Milwaukee educator + 14-year-old boy + movie + sofa = handcuffs MARCH 21--Meet Kelly Sweet. The eighth grade teacher, 26, is facing a felony rap for an alleged sexual encounter  with a 14-year-old boy in her Milwaukee apartment earlier this month. As noted in a Circuit Court criminal complaint,  the Deer Creek Intermediate School teacher was watching a movie with the boy on March 9 when she initiated illicit  contact while the pair was seated on her couch (Sweet had been resting her head on the boy's lap). The charged  assault involved Sweet allegedly "grinding her pubic mound" against the victim. The educator, pictured above in a  Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office mug shot, was named in a March 20 criminal information charging her with  sexual assault of a child. If convicted, Sweet could face a maximum of 40 years behind bars.

Slide 17: In 1962, photographer Bert Stern shot a series of photos of Marilyn Monroe that have collectively come to be known  as “The Last Sitting.” Taken during several boozy sessions at the Hotel Bel-Air, the photographs are arguably the  most famous images ever captured of America’s most famous actress: Monroe, sleepy-eyed and naked, sips from a  Champagne glass, enacts a fan dance of sorts with various diaphanous scarves, romps with erotic playfulness on a  bed of white linens. Six weeks after she had posed, Monroe was found dead of an apparent barbiturate overdose. 

Slide 18: The German photographer Ivonne Thein shows her new work in Berlin: She photographed "normal weight" models and photoshopped them down to looking like as if they'd weigh 32 kilos. Thein originally wanted to shoot the photos with the "leaders" of the German pro-ana movement she was in touch with during the preparation for her project, but all of the young women finally refused to get physically involved.
