2. Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1
• Time to Pretend – MGMT
• The song itself is quite averaged paced, and the music video’s speed
matches that.
• The “trippy” visuals match the neo-psychadelic sounds of the band
• What’s being said in the song, about things like
4. Product 2
• Gamma Knife / People-Vultures – King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (Official
Video)
• The music video is one continuous 10 minute video, however the music is
actually two songs that are next to each other in the album.
• The songs are both fast paced and they lead into one another as if it were
one song on it’s own, therefor the music video works as one. It can also be
watched as two separate music videos, but they also lead into one another
so it’s better watched like this.
• The video goes with the lyrics, talking about “Gamma Knife” whilst showing
knives stabbing into the ground in the video, and then the second half is
about “People-Vultures” and the video features I giant vulture suit with 7
band members inside.
• Both videos were directed by Danny Cohen and Jason Galea. Danny’s
website is www.dannycohen.com.
• The entire album can be watched as a looping music video.
5. Product 3
• Guillotine – Death Grips
• In this slow paced music video, it’s stylistically unique. This fits with
the song as it’s hard to place a genre on the band.
• The video has a chroma keyed background filled with static which
leaks into the “protagonist” of the video. I would like to replicate a
similar style to this for my music video.
6. Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
7. Conventions
• Music videos tend to all follow conventions. Most have singing and
the band, but some have a narrative.
• Lots of modern music videos tend to sexualise men and women,
often leaving them scantily clad and sweaty. *
• Music videos are often edited to the beat, changing angle or scene as
a drum hits or a snare rings.
*See “Satisfaction – Benny Benassi” and “Work From Home – Fifth Harmony”
8. Genre Characteristics
• The genre of Neo-Psychedelia doesn’t have any defining
characteristics as every band is usually completely different in their
style.
• If you look at MGMT’s “Kids” and Tame Impala’s “The Less I Know The
Better” you’ll see that there are no links to genre in the video, whilst
both bands are clearly in the same genre.
• The only convention in the music videos is that they’re usually quite
low-budget and amateur on purpose as a stylistic choice.
9. Chosen approach/justification
• I have chosen to film the video inside of college, giving it a narrative
that makes no sense to the song. This is so that there is the link to
the “WTF” factor of the Neo-Psychedelia genre that most music
videos there have.
10. Experiments
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did.
Be prepared to add extra slides.
You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.
11. Experiment 1 - Process
Making the video was quite simple,
the hardest part was syncing the
audio to the clips.
I downloaded a bunch of clips of
artillery firing from YouTube, added
the song and put them together.
The next step was to cut the clips up
into short pieces and put them to
the beat of the music.
There was also a nice little clip of a
soldier resting so I thought I’d put
that in the end with some relaxing
jazz music as a little joke.
12. Reflection
• All in all, I feel like the experiment went well. If I had more time, I would’ve
been able to sync the clips up more accurately, but because of how fast
paced the song is you can hardly notice.
• The good thing about the experiment is that it shows my ability to cut to the
beat which will help in my final product.
• The main downside from my experiment was that it took a long time to make
because I’m not particularly good at editing to the beat so when my actual
product comes around it will effect the quality of work if I don’t have enough
time to edit.
