1. Librara todos los que por el temor de la muerte, Vida , Peace
Es algo muy natural que el hombre tenga temor de morir, pues,
originalmente, no fue creado para morir. Cuando Adán y Eva
fueron puestos en el huerto del Edén en el principio, estaban en
una condición tal que podrían haber permanecido allí por
miríadas de años, si hubiesen guardado su integridad. No había
razón para que el hombre no caído debiera morir; pero ahora que
hemos pecado, las semillas de la corrupción están en nuestra
carne, y está establecido que los hombres deben morir.
Sin embargo, como si el cuerpo supiera que no fue de acuerdo al
primer decreto del cielo que tuviera que sucumbir a la tierra y al
gusano, tiene una renuencia natural a regresar a su último lecho.
Y este temor de la muerte, en tanto que es natural, no es malo. De
hecho, sirve un propósito muy elevado en la economía de la
humanidad, pues habría muchos individuos tentados a poner un
fin a esta vida mortal, si no fuera por el temor de la muerte. Pero
poner un fin a su vida por su propia mano sería un hecho
espantoso; probaría que no era un hijo de Dios, pues "Sabéis que
ningún homicida tiene vida eterna permanente en él." Quiero
decir, por supuesto, si tal hecho fuera llevado a cabo por alguien
en posesión de sus sentidos; no estoy juzgando a quienes han
perdido la razón, y que no son responsables de sus actos. Si
alguien en su sobrio sentido cometiere un suicidio, no podríamos
tener ninguna esperanza de vida eterna para él. Sin embargo
muchos se suicidarían si no fuera porque tienen grabado el temor
de lo que resultaría al poner así fin a su existencia.
Hasta aquí podrán ver que el temor de la muerte cumple un bu---

3. en propósito, y es, en sí mismo, bueno; pero con mucha facilidad
puede ir más allá del punto de ser bueno, hasta la región en que se
vuelve un mal; y yo no dudo que muchas personas piadosas estén
imbuidas de un temor a la muerte que es muy malo, y que
produce efectos muy nocivos. Algunos, sin duda, han sido
impedidos de confesar a Cristo, y de seguirlo plenamente, por
causa del temor de la muerte; tal vez no tanto ahora como en los
días de los mártires. En aquel entonces, hubo espíritus heroicos
que iban voluntariamente a la hoguera, o a cualquier otra forma
dolorosa de muerte que hubiese decretado el tirano en turno, y
alegremente, con gritos de victoria, entregaban sus vidas que no
estimaron preciosas para sí mismos, por causa de Jesucristo.
Pero hubo espíritus tímidos que rehuyeron esa ordalía; amaron la
vida y temieron a la muerte, especialmente en las terribles formas
en que les iba a ser impuesta. Esta huída sería errónea en
cualquiera de nosotros; si el temor de la muerte nos condujera a
deshonrar a Cristo, seríamos culpables de pecado mortal. Si un
hombre resuelve seguir a Cristo, no debe amar más su propia vida
en comparación con el amor de Jesucristo, sino que debe estar
anuente a entregarla por causa de Aquél que entregó Su vida en la
cruz por nosotros.
El temor de la muerte también motiva a muchos cristianos a
soportar muchas aflicciones innecesarias. Están enfermos, y a
punto de morir, y, en vez de tener un estado mental calmo y
sereno, como deberían tenerlo, están perturbados y agobiados en
gran manera. Aun cuando se encuentren bien, sucede algunas
veces que, al sentarse y reflexionar acerca de sus últimas horas, se
deprimen y se preocupan. Ahora, esta aflicción es una aflicción de
la carne que debe evitarse; debemos buscar la gracia para
conquistar esa aflicción, para que no tengamos la tristeza del
mundo que produce muerte.
Este temor de la muerte es muy deshonroso para Dios. Parecería
4. que puedes confiar en Él cuando hay buen tiempo, pero no
durante las tormentas; que puedes creer en Él cuando estás bien y
eres fuerte, pero que no puedes confiar el Él cuando te fallan la
salud y la fortaleza. Nunca olvides lo que dijo David: "Dios,
nuestro Dios ha de salvarnos, y de Jehová el Señor es el librar de
la muerte." Grandemente glorificamos a Dios cuando podemos
decir con Job: "He aquí, aunque él me matare, en él esperaré;"
pero si tenemos temor de morir, parecería que no tuviéramos
confianza plena en Dios, o ese amor perfecto hacia Él que expulsa
al temor.
Y este temor de la muerte tiende también a deshonrar mucho a
nuestra santa religión a los ojos de quienes no son creyentes en
Jesús. La calma con la que el cristiano espera su fin, e inclusive el
santo gozo con que lo anticipa, es una de las cosas que los impíos
no pueden entender; y aun si no lo confiesan, quedan altamente
impresionados por ello, y a menudo sienten que sus corazones
anhelan conocer ese bendito secreto que hace que los cristianos
esperen sus últimos días sobre la tierra con espíritu tan jovial. El
cristiano que contempla la muerte con gozo, es un sermón
viviente. Es una mejor defensa del Evangelio que todas las obras
que Butler y Paley, y los otros escritores de evidencias cristianas,
hayan compilado jamás. De aquí, queridos amigos, que la Iglesia
de Cristo pierda esta defensa, y el mundo pierda esta evidencia,
cuando nos turbamos por el temor de la muerte. Este miedo no
debería encontrarse en los cristianos; si alguna vez lo sintieran,
deberían luchar contra él hasta vencerlo.
"¿Por qué sobresaltarnos, o por qué temer a la muerte?
¡Qué gusanos temerosos somos los mortales!
La muerte es la puerta para el gozo ilimitado,
Y sin embargo sentimos un pavor de entrar allí.
Los dolores, los gemidos, los estertores moribundos,
Aterran a nuestras almas cuando nos acercamos;
5. Todavía nos encogemos buscando la vida,
Afectos a nuestra prisión y a nuestro barro."
"¿Cómo podremos librarnos de este temor?" Bien, no tratemos
nunca de librarnos de él, como lo hacen algunos, olvidándonos
por completo de la muerte. Eso sería vivir como las bestias que
perecen; ellas viven su pequeño día aquí, sin ningún pensamiento
más allá del presente. El buey y la oveja van al matadero sin el
poder de mirar más allá de la vida presente. No me gustaría
alcanzar la paz mental, poniéndome al nivel de ese "ganado
arriado y sumiso." Sin embargo en muchos hombres la única paz
brota de la irreflexión; pero esa es una triste paz que no puede
resistir el estudio y la consideración. Vamos, conocemos a ciertas
personas que pueden ser valerosas cuando están acompañadas, y
que inclusive llegan a blasfemar contra Dios; pero pónganlos solos
en una habitación, oblíguenlos a pensar en la soledad durante una
única hora, y no podrían ser condenados a una mayor miseria. No
pueden soportar la idea de deshacerse de sus gozos presentes;
aventurarse en otro mundo les parece una empresa tan riesgosa,
que prefieren olvidar todo al respecto, y cerrar sus ojos a todos los
pensamientos más allá de esta vida.

fallenmanshoulddie;butnowthatwe have sinned,seedof corruptionisinourflesh,anditis
establishedthatmenmustdie.
However,asif the bodyknewthat wasnot accordingto the firstdecree fromheavenhadto succumbto
the earth andto the worm,he has a natural reluctance toreturn to hislastbed.Andthisfearof death,
as is natural,isnotbad. In fact,it servesahigher purpose inthe economyof humanity,because there
wouldbe manypeople temptedtoputan endto thismortal life,were itnotforthe fearof death.But

turn,and happily,withshoutsof victory,gave theirlivesnotconsideredbeautiful forthemselves,
because JesusChrist.
But there were timidspiritswhoshunnedthe ordeal;Theylovedlife andfeareddeath,especiallyinthe
terrible waysinwhichtheywouldbe imposed.Thisflightwouldbe wrongforanyof us; if the fearof
deathleadusto dishonorChrist,we wouldbe guiltyof mortal sin.If a manresolvedtofollow Christ,you
mustnot love theirownlivesmore comparedtothe love of JesusChrist,butmustbe consentingto
deliverbecauseof Himwhogave His life onthe crossfor us.
The fear of deathalsomotivatesmanyChristianstoendure manyunnecessarysufferings.Theyare sick
and dying,andinsteadof havingacalm and serene state of mind,astheyshouldhave it,are troubled
and burdenedgreatly.Evenwhentheyare well,itsometimeshappensthat,whenyousitandthink

avoided;we mustseekthe grace to conquerthisaffliction,sothatwe do nothave the sorrow of the
worldproducesdeath.
Thisfear of deathisverydishonorable toGod.It wouldseemthatyoucan trust himwhenthere isgood
weather,butduringstorms;youcan believe inHimwhenyouare well andare strong,butyou can not
trust Himwhenyoufail the healthandstrength.NeverforgetwhatDavidsaid,"God,ourGod will save
us,and the Lord God belongthe issuesof death."GreatlyglorifyGodwhenwe cansaywithJob,"Lo,
thoughhe slayme,I hope in him;"butif we are afraidto die,itwouldappearthat we didnot have full
confidence inGod,orthat perfecttowardsHimthat love castsout fear.
