Outline of Presentaion
• Character Sketch: An-Mei and Rose
• Reasons of Conlict
• Consequences of the Conlict
• Resoluion
An Mei
• Born and raised in China by her grandmother
Popo but later moves to San Francisco, marries
and has seven children
• Mother became concubine of another man
when her father died
• She was not allowed to talk about or speak of
their mother so they forgot her very soon
• Living with an aunt she was brainwashed that
her mother was evil
Contd.
• But when she sees her mother trying to heal
someone by cuing a piece of her own lesh , she
inds her a very kind person
• She learnt lessons in stoic and severe love
• Mother taught her to swallow her tears, to
conceal her pain and to distrust others
• Though having very rough childhood she learns
that know mater what comes up in the life, one
sill has to ind the way to keep honour and
respect for the family
Contd.
• She later learns to speak up and assert herself
but she fears that she has handed down a
certain passivity to her daughter Rose
• She sees fate as what one is desined to
struggle for achieving
• When her youngest son Bill dies she ceases to
express any outward faith in God rather
retains in the force of will
Rose
• Youngest of An Mei’s and George Hsu’s three
daughters
• Born and raised in the United States
• She has been Americanized in way that she doesn't
care to follow the same customs as her mothers
culture
• Married Ted Jordon despite protests from both An
Mei and Mrs. Jordon
Contd.
• Finds herself unable to assert her opinion, to
stand up for herself or to make decisions
.......over the years Ted decided where we went on
vacaion. He decided what new furniture we should buy.
He decided we should wait unil we moved into a beter
neighbourhood before having children. We used to
discuss some of these maters but we both knew the
quesion would boil down to me saying, Ted you decide.
Ater a while there was no more discussions. Ted simply
decided. (Page, 135)
Contd.
• She sees her mother as a hypocrite
• Life for her is not about keeping honor it’s
about keeping oneself strong and doing what
it takes to make a person happy
• Things started changing between Ted and
Rose
• Ted starts saying ‘You decide’
• Finally he wants divorce from Rose
Contd.
.....now I realize Ted knew what he was saying all
along. He wanted to show me the rit. Because
later that evening he called from Los Angeles and
said he wanted divorce.
( page 137)
Reasons of conlict
Disagreement in Marriage
Her mother warns her not to marry Ted since he
is an American but she rejects it and replies
she is an American too
‘He is American’’, warned my mother,a s if I
had been too blind to noice.
I’m American to,’’ I said,
(Page, 133)
Contd.
Diferent Values in Life
An Mei and Rose have diferent values in life.
They try to achieve completely with diferent
soluions to the same problem.
My mother believed in God’s will for so many years.
(Page, 137)
An Mei inds a way to keep her honor and
respect when Rose makes her self happy, and
ight for what she wants.
Contd.
Her mother advises her to save marriage but she doesn't
listen
More than 30 years later, my mother was sill trying to make me
listen (Page, 222)
Generaion Gap
• An Mei was born in China and Rose being born in
America has got diferences because of Generaion gap.
An Mei holds the Chinese tradiional beliefs whereas
her daughter is enslaved to modern American culture
• They both do not want to understand each other
Contd.
• An-Mei (being brought up the Chinese way)
was more strict and non-sympatheic
• Rose was born more free and the racist term
(the American Way) means she can be more
ignorant to situaions and shows emoions
whenever she feels like it
Consequences
• Since there is a conlict between the mother and
daughter, they don’t have harmonious lives and
the daughter never desires to listen to her mother
-Rose heads towards a psychiatrist instead of listening to her
own heart, which her mother disagrees because she was
taught and to follow what she thinks is right, not just
someone you pay so you can receive the ‘right’ answers.
-the daughter avoids her mother very oten
Resoluion
• Realizaion of one’s origin
Thinking back I remember that this beach cove
was a terrible place , full of wet shadows that
chilled us and invisible specks that lew into our
eyes and made it hard for us to see the dangers.
We were all blind with the newness of this
experience: a Chinese family trying to act like a
typical American family at the beach
(Page, 139)
Contd.
• Begins to call back the lines told by her
mother
A girl is like a young tree’’, she said. ‘’You
must stand and tall and listen to your mother
standing next to you. That is the only way to
grow and straight.
Page, 227)
Contd.
• Discovered the serious laws of American
versions of choices
It was only later that I discovered that there
was a serious law with the American version.
There were too many choices so it was easy to
get confused and pick the wrong thing. That’s
how I felt about my situaion with Ted.
(Page, 228)
Contd.
• Finally she inds inside herself her mother’s
strength to take care of herself and turns the
table on her no-good husband.
