Diferent Values in Life
An Mei and Rose have diferent values in life.
They try to achieve completely with diferent
soluions to the same problem.
My mother believed in God’s will for so many years.
(Page, 137)

ight for what she wants.

Generaion Gap
• An Mei was born in China and Rose being born in
America has got diferences because of Generaion gap.
An Mei holds the Chinese tradiional beliefs whereas
her daughter is enslaved to modern American culture
• They both do not want to understand each other
13. Contd.
• An-Mei (being brought up the Chinese way)
was more strict and non-sympatheic
• Rose was born more free and the racist term
(the American Way) means she can be more
ignorant to situaions and shows emoions
whenever she feels like it
14. Consequences
• Since there is a conlict between the mother and
daughter, they don’t have harmonious lives and
the daughter never desires to listen to her mother
-Rose heads towards a psychiatrist instead of listening to her
own heart, which her mother disagrees because she was
taught and to follow what she thinks is right, not just
someone you pay so you can receive the ‘right’ answers.
-the daughter avoids her mother very oten
15. Resoluion
• Realizaion of one’s origin
Thinking back I remember that this beach cove
was a terrible place , full of wet shadows that
chilled us and invisible specks that lew into our
eyes and made it hard for us to see the dangers.
We were all blind with the newness of this
experience: a Chinese family trying to act like a
typical American family at the beach
(Page, 139)
16. Contd.
• Begins to call back the lines told by her
mother
A girl is like a young tree’’, she said. ‘’You
must stand and tall and listen to your mother
standing next to you. That is the only way to
grow and straight.
Page, 227)
17. Contd.
• Discovered the serious laws of American
versions of choices
It was only later that I discovered that there
was a serious law with the American version.
There were too many choices so it was easy to
get confused and pick the wrong thing. That’s
how I felt about my situaion with Ted.
(Page, 228)
18. Contd.
• Finally she inds inside herself her mother’s
strength to take care of herself and turns the
table on her no-good husband.
