Project X was developed at MIT in the 1950s when a professor planned to
place a large number of dipoles in Earth’s orbit so they could be used for
effective communication. Almost half a billion X were placed on an Air Force
Satellite and sent into space in order to form this dense dipole. While initial
results were promising, other countries were afraid that this belt would
interfere with other observations. While the project is now forgotten, few
clumps of X still exist in space are are kept in close observation to make sure
they don’t cause any problems.
