Introduction to Philosophy of the Human Person
ROSE ANNE P. RAMOS
SHS-TEACHER II
Hi dear televiewers and
subscribers! It’s me again
Teacher Rose Anne P. Ramos
from Camp Tinio National
High School and welcome to
our Lesson 2 of The
Introduction to the
Philosophy of the Human
Person.
For our Lesson 2 we will
be discussing about
Environmentalism and
Sustainable
Development.
At the end of this lesson, you
will be able to:
1. Discuss the ideas of
environmentalism and
sustainability.
2.Develop ways on how
to care for the
environment.
3.Reflect on one’s action
that show care for the
environment that will
contribute to health, well-
being and sustainable
development.
But before that let us have a
short review about :
1. Natural Order
2. Environmental Disorder
3. Environmental Aesthetics
It is the built-in
arrangement that belongs
to things inherently, and
according to the very
nature they possess.
When the natural order
of things were disrupted,
challenges emerge in a
form of ENVIRONMENTAL
DISORDER.
And to help in maintaining
the Natural Order, we have
to use Environmental
Aesthetics or the idea of
seeing the beauty and value
in everyday activities or
what we call aesthetics of
everyday life.
Now that were done with
the review let us now
proceed to another two
important ideas that could
help us in having a
harmonious relationship
with the environment.
First idea is
environmentalism.
How does the idea of
environmentalism
emerged?
Biophysical environment is the
combined modelling of the
physical environment and the
biological life forms within, and
includes all variables,
parameters as well as
conditions and modes inside
the Earth’s biosphere.
The biophysical
environment can be divided
into two categories:
a. Natural environment
b. Built environment (man-
made).
Following the industrial
revolution, the built
environment has become
an increasingly
significant part of the
environment.
The role of philosophy is
to enable man to thrive
in both environments,
without sacrificing the
others.
In view of this there is a
need to come out with ways
on how this environment
can be sustained to meet
the needs of man and
preserving it as well thus
the emergence of the ideas
of environmentalism.
Environmentalism refers
to a social movement
and associated body of
thought that expresses
concern for the state of
the natural environment
and seeks to limit the
impact of human
activities on the
environment.
It is a theory that
views environment
as an important
factor in the
development of an
individual.
One of the major concepts
that drive environmentalism
is sustainability.
This concept focuses on
reconciling human activities
and economic development
with the protection of the
environment.
Sustainability relies on
three important
principles:
environmental
integrity, economic
efficiency, and equity.
Let us discuss each of
them.
First, environmental
integrity
Environmental integrity
refers to maintaining the
natural state of the
environment. Care should be
taken that the surrounding
landscape is not drastically
impacted by human
activities.
Just like in the picture, rice
fields are for planting rice
and that should serve the
purpose, we can still live
around it without destroying
it.
Economic efficiency refers
to prudence in decision-
making regarding the use
of resources to ensure
that there is little to zero
waste.
Instead of using styro
foams, why not use lunch
boxes? Reusable so you
are saving money and
less waste.
Finally, equity demands
that we use our natural
resources in such a
manner that these are
conserved so that the
next generation will be
able to use them.
Using such concepts man
has to design ways on how
environmental problems can
be address and each action
should lead towards
sustainability which also
means development.
Development on the other hand
should mean growth, however
such growth doesn’t mean the
decline of the environment but
rather a harmonious transition
from low to progress without
compromising the latter, such
is sustainable development.
Sustainable development
is a socio-ecological
process characterized by
the fulfilment of human
needs while maintaining
the quality of the natural
environment.
Because we have:
1. limited amount of space
2. our resources have limits.
3. our technology has limits
too.
With that in
consideration, man is left
with the challenge on
how are we supposed to
address the long list of
environmental problems
that are present in our
society?
Let us have a short activity.
Which of the following
pictures do you think shows
actions that supports
sustainable development?
PICTURE A
PICTURE C
PICTURE E
Picture A-provides food
through gardening
Picture C- uses eco-friendly
and livelihood supporting
transportation (tribike or
padyak)
Picture E-supports no to plastic
use which is a major cause of
pollution.
Great, good job! I think
you already
understand what
sustainable
development means.
How to develop ways that
support sustainable
development?
The answer is
transformation, a change
in PERSPECTIVE.
Let us change our current
perspective, our emphasis
on helping the environment
to a sustainable emphasis.
Here’s how to live
sustainably.
From
POLLUTION
CLEAN UP
To
POLLUTION
PREVENTION
From
WASTE DISPOSAL
(BURY OR BURN)
To
WASTE
PREVENTION
From
PROTECTING
SPECIES
To
PROTECTING
HABITAT
From
ENVIRONMENTAL
DEGRADATION
To
ENVIRONMENTAL
RESTORATION
From
INCREASING
RESOURCE USE
To
LESS RESOURCE
WASTE
From
POPULATION
GROWTH
To
POPULATION
STABILIZATION
From
DEPLETING
NATURAL CAPITAL
To
PROTECTING
NATURAL CAPITAL
In the end, the answer to the
need of the environment lies
within our hands. Through
our initiatives, daily actions
and careful thoughts about
the environment could lead
towards sustainability.
You should dedicate
yourself in improving the
quality of life that you
have without degrading
the natural environment,
our support system.
Your actions will eventually
lead your family, then our
society to work hand in hand
in caring for this world.
Remember that: to care for
this world, is to care for our
own lives as well.
Once again, I’m Teacher
Rose Anne P. Ramos, Thank
you for actively participating
in our lesson. Until our next
session. Magandang Buhay,
Mabuting Tao!
