According to Shepard (2001), responsive test items "require
examinees to apply what they know in a context that demands
analysis, synthesis, and evaluation" (p. 69).
Example: A reading comprehension
"The Power of Positive Thinking"
As a young boy, Jack's parents taught him the
importance of always looking on the bright side of things.
They told him that if he believed in himself and thought
positively, he could accomplish anything he set his mind
to.
Years later, as a struggling actor in Hollywood,
Jack remembered his parents' words and decided to give
positive thinking a try. He started visualizing himself as a
successful actor, repeating positive affirmations to himself,
and surrounding himself with supportive people.
To his amazement, Jack's career took off. He
landed a lead role in a major film and became a household
household name. He credited his success to his positive
attitude and the power of his thoughts. Despite the
challenges that came with fame, Jack continued to practice

To ensure that the cake turns out perfectly, I would follow these steps:
1. Choose a recipe and read through it carefully to ensure that I have all the
necessary ingredients and equipment.
2. Preheat the oven to the correct temperature and prepare the baking pan
by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper.
3. Measure out all the ingredients precisely and mix them together
according to the recipe instructions, making sure not to overmix the
batter.
4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
5. Place the pan in the preheated oven and set a timer for the
recommended baking time.
6. Check the cake periodically during baking to make sure it is not
overbrowning or drying out.
7. Once the cake is finished baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool
in the pan for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool
completely.
8. Once the cake is completely cooled, decorate it with frosting or other
toppings as desired.
