Background
BACKGROUND
- At work, there are risks to mental health, also known as
psychosocial risks.
- Amy Edelstein, who is a popular author and the founder
of Inner Strength Education, emphasised that mental
health problems should not be seen in isolation.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) conducted
research that supports this view, estimating that
depression and anxiety lead to 12 billion lost working
days each year, resulting in a cost of $1 trillion for
businesses due to decreased productivity. Burnout, in
particular, is a significant mental health issue that is
increasing rapidly.

➢ A study by Kronos Inc. and Future Workplace found that almost
half of human resources leaders believed that employee burnout
was responsible for a significant portion of their workforce
turnover, with some leaders thinking it caused more than half of
the annual turnover.
➢ Employers have an important role to play in this crisis, as they
can provide crucial support for their employees before, during,
and after mental health challenges.
➢ According to a report by CCLA, a leading charity investment
management firm in the U.K., there is a significant gap between
companies' commitments and the actions they are actually
taking. While over 90% of companies recognize mental health as
a crucial workplace issue, only about one-third of them have
established formal objectives and targets to address it. (Mudrick,
2023)

▪ As a result, this will lead the
employees to be much loyal
towards the organization,
potentially boosting the
organization productivity.

▪ The undertaken measures will be
able to protect the company from
losing productive employees.
▪ According to the Malaysian
Employers Federation (MEF)
president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain
Syed Husman, Malaysia recorded a
total of 1142 suicide cases in 2021.
▪ Apart from risk losing valuable
employees, the organization will
also ensure the emotions and
productivity of the entire
workforce is kept at a positive
tone.

▪ The organization will be able to improve its organizational values and reputation
further with its measures.
▪ In the eyes of employees, the organization will be perceived to be caring and to be
taking care of employees’ wellbeing.
▪ This in turn will be able to turn the organization into a positive workplace to work
in.
▪ The efforts undertaken will be able to place the organization in a good perception in
the public eye as well, for its contribution to the social aspects of its business.

loneliness as the key and what is the relationship

Matters that focuses on construction workers mental
health factors and the importance of knowing it for

the views of American adults regarding mental health
disorders and treatment as well as the stigma
remaining in some of them.

BACKGROUND - At work, there are risks to mental health, also known as psychosocial risks. - Amy Edelstein, who is a popular author and the founder of Inner Strength Education, emphasised that mental health problems should not be seen in isolation. - The World Health Organization (WHO) conducted research that supports this view, estimating that depression and anxiety lead to 12 billion lost working days each year, resulting in a cost of $1 trillion for businesses due to decreased productivity. Burnout, in particular, is a significant mental health issue that is increasing rapidly. 4 ➢ A study by Kronos Inc. and Future Workplace found that almost half of human resources leaders believed that employee burnout was responsible for a significant portion of their workforce turnover, with some leaders thinking it caused more than half of the annual turnover. ➢ Employers have an important role to play in this crisis, as they can provide crucial support for their employees before, during, and after mental health challenges. ➢ According to a report by CCLA, a leading charity investment management firm in the U.K., there is a significant gap between companies' commitments and the actions they are actually taking. While over 90% of companies recognize mental health as a crucial workplace issue, only about one-third of them have established formal objectives and targets to address it. (Mudrick, 2023)

Improve Employee Confidence & Motivations ▪ Mental health conditions can affect a person’s confidence and identity at work. ▪ An employee’s ability to work productively will be affected as well, possibly resulting in a high number of absences. ▪ Without proper methods, employees tend to lose motivation for their day-to-day tasks which results in them being unproductive. often leading employees to miss work, placing a dent on daily operations of a business. ▪ According to WHO, almost twelve billion working days are lost every year due to depression and anxiety experienced by employees. 21 Improve Company Productivity ▪ With effective measures implemented by the organisation, mental related issues such as depression, anxiety and psychological distress among employees will be able to be reduced, leading to better productivity within the organisation. ▪ Organisational loyalty among employees will be improved as well.
  • 22. 22 Improve Work-Life Balance ▪ In Malaysia, according to Ranstad’s Workmonitor bi-annual survey and report noted that many highly value a working environment that promotes employee wellbeing and flexibility. ▪ With initiatives undertaken for improving mental health in the workplace, the work-life balance of employees will be improved. ▪ As a result, this will lead the employees to be much loyal towards the organization, potentially boosting the organization productivity. Reduce The Risk of Losing Valuable Employees ▪ The undertaken measures will be able to protect the company from losing productive employees. ▪ According to the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman, Malaysia recorded a total of 1142 suicide cases in 2021. ▪ Apart from risk losing valuable employees, the organization will also ensure the emotions and productivity of the entire workforce is kept at a positive tone.
