1&1 VIRTUAL SERVERS

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

4
What is a Virtual Server?
What is a Virtual Server?
For many users, having an entire set of powerful machines dedicated to their needs is overkill, so it makes economic sense
to share. A virtual server is a solution whereby each user is allocated their own private portion of resources on a server that
is shared among several users, thus the term virtual server. Each user then effectively has their own server running
completely independently of the others, functioning in the same way as a regular server. Different users of the same physical
server would never have access to other users’ data.

What can you do with a Virtual Server?
With virtual servers, you can host multiple websites, databases, forums, blogs and much more, without having to invest in
the hardware to run a dedicated physical server. Until you have data-intensive needs, a virtual server will fit the bill for most
users.

Do I need to be a technical wiz to use a Virtual Server?
Not at all. The management software 1&1 provides – Parallels® Plesk Panel – simplifies the process of managing your
virtual server. You can control your server via the 1&1 Control Panel with ease, and you do not need to have expert
knowledge of servers. We provide useful online FAQs, expert support by e-mail and phone, and you can contact our sales
and support team 24/7 on 0844 335 1211.

What is a Virtual Server?
What’s the difference between shared hosting and a virtual server?
Virtual servers differ from shared hosting as each customer’s virtual server is effectively separate from those of other
customers and is provided with dedicated resources. If you need more control over your hosting environment or if your
website becomes so busy that you need to take the next step up and move from shared resources to dedicated resources,
then a virtual server is an ideal intermediate step without the outlay of a dedicated server.
What’s the difference between a cloud server and a virtual server?
A cloud server gives you the ability to scale multiple virtual machines across multiple servers using cloud architecture,
whereas a virtual server is a single segment of one physical server and provides a virtual environment to provide dedicated
resources as and when you need them.
What’s the difference between a dedicated server and a virtual server?
A virtual server differs from a dedicated server in that a user does not have a complete server dedicated to their content, but
rather an area with a set of resources within a shared server that behaves as though it is a separate machine.

Alternatives to 1&1 Virtual Servers
Do you want to customise features to your business needs and manage your costs?
Having a virtual server means you have one virtual machine on a server that is shared among several users. This is
ideal for smaller business as it makes economic sense. The level of performance required can be chosen with our three
packages: 1&1 Virtual Server L, 1&1 Virtual Server XL and 1&1 Virtual Server XXL.
However, if your online projects have outgrown your current hosting resources and you need the capability for even
more power, then we suggest the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server. With the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server you can add up to 99
virtual machines, which can be customised to your configuration needs at any point during your contract to handle peaks in
traffic. You can choose the amount of RAM, hard disk space and vCores needed. A cloud infrastructure is suitable for
customers requiring flexibility to increase or decrease resources at certain peak times, providing scalability and complete
cost control.

Do you want a fixed monthly rate and dedicated high performance based on your known/expected requirements?
Dedicated servers provide guaranteed resources with high levels of performance and flexibility. With dedicated
servers, even large websites with high user traffic and extensive content like forums and blogs are easy to maintain.
1&1 Dedicated Servers are ideal for small, medium and large business wanting to run data-intensive websites and
applications, at a fixed monthly rate.

11
What is a Cloud Server?
What is a cloud server?
Cloud computing allows you to store, access and share data from a cluster of Internet-connected devices known as ‘the
cloud’. Cloud servers use the resources of a group of servers, allowing your websites and projects to use resources on a
scalable basis. Because hardware resources are available virtually, it’s much simpler to vary them according to your current
requirements.

What can you do with a cloud server?
Cloud servers can be used for hosting single or multiple websites, as well as application servers, database servers, file or
mail servers, name or web servers or any other type of servers that requires internet access.

Do I need to be a technical wiz do use a cloud server?
Not at all. The management software 1&1 provides – Parallels® Plesk Panel – simplifies the process of managing your 1&1
Dynamic Cloud Server. You can easily configure features and manage server performance at any time during your contract
period via your 1&1 Control Panel or the 1&1 Mobile Cloud Server Management app. You can also use the 1&1 Control
Panel to add or remove virtual machines as needed, whenever required. We provide useful online FAQs, expert support by
e-mail and phone, and you can contact our sales support team 24/7 on 0844 335 1211.

What is a Cloud Server?
What’s the difference between shared hosting and a cloud server?
Shared web hosting uses space on a server, sharing resources with other users. Cloud infrastructure provides
customers with the flexibility to increase or decrease their resources at certain times, offering enhanced
performance and cost control.
What’s the difference between a virtual server and a cloud server?
A cloud server gives you the ability to scale multiple virtual machines across multiple servers, whereas a virtual server is a
single segment of one physical server.
What’s the difference between a dedicated server and a cloud server?
Unlike a cloud server, which stores data on a number of devices connected to the Internet, a dedicated server is completely
contained within a single defined set of server hardware.

18
What is a Dedicated Server?
What is a dedicated server?
The term dedicated server refers to a web hosting service where specific server hardware is allocated to a customer for delivering
content on the Internet. Unlike normal web hosting or shared hosting, a dedicated server isn’t shared with anyone else, so it
provides guaranteed resources with high levels of performance and flexibility.

What can you do with a dedicated server?
Dedicated servers are used for a wide variety of purposes, from simply hosting websites to managing databases, e-mails, web
applications, file storage and backups. With dedicated servers, even large websites with high user traffic and extensive content like
forums and blogs are easy to maintain. Dedicated servers are ideal for small, medium and large business wanting to run dataintensive websites and applications.

Do I need to be a technical wiz to use a dedicated server?
No. While some of the technical details might seem daunting, setting up your 1&1 Dedicated Server is simple via a step-by-step
order process. When ordering you have the choice of full root access, providing more direct control for technically proficient
customers, or a managed service, where we take care of the details for you.
You can easily control your server at any time via your 1&1 Control Panel, and system administration is simple with Parallels®
Plesk Panel 11, the leading management software provided free with your server package. For more support, you can always

19
What is a Dedicated Server?
What’s the difference between shared hosting and a dedicated server?
In a standard web hosting environment, websites from several hosting customers share the same server hardware, software,
operating systems, and various additional resources. Hosting content on a dedicated server differs in that each customer’s
data is hosted completely separately and does not compete for resources, guaranteeing a certain level of consistent
performance.
What’s the difference between a virtual server and a dedicated server?
A virtual server differs from a dedicated server in that a user does not have a complete server dedicated to their content, but
rather an area with a set of resources within a shared server that behaves as though it is a separate machine.
What’s the difference between a cloud server and a dedicated server?

1&1 Dedicated Server Benefits
With a 1&1 Dedicated Server, you can benefit from a wide range of features. Our wide product portfolio allows us to
deliver a dedicated server solution to meet your needs. With state-of-the-art hardware and best in class data centres, you
can always count on powerful performance, whatever your server requirements!
Who can benefit from 1&1 Dedicated Servers?
1&1 Dedicated Server packages are designed for customers who have relatively long-term, consistent needs for hosting
high-performance web applications and high traffic websites. With dedicated resources, busy websites, forums, blogs and
eShops can be easily maintained.

 Powerful performance from dedicated resources
When it comes to running a website with large traffic volumes or data-intensive applications, dedicated
resources are invaluable in managing your online presence effectively. Because no other users are sharing
your server space, you can always count on high levels of performance to cope easily with spikes in website
traffic.

 Maximum security
Rest assured that your sever is in capable hands, with highly secure data centres and networks, as well as
active fraud and security management teams with 24/7 monitoring. 1&1 understands how important the
security of sensitive information is to businesses, and we’re committed to ensuring
that your server and customer data is kept safe and secure at all times.

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

22
1&1 Dedicated Server Benefits
 Tune-up your server
Enhance your server performance with additional options including 1&1 FTP Backup, SSL Certificates and
more. It’s all available at any time via your 1&1 Control Panel and the 1&1 Customer Shop.

 Full root access or managed by 1&1
For customers who know exactly what applications they want to run, full root access is recommended, as it gives the
user all permissions to change the whole system at their own discretion. With a managed server, we take care of security
updates, system maintenance, initial configuration and installation, and hardware replacement. There are no limits on
memory usage, number of running processes, CPU usage, etc. However, managed servers do not allow you to install
applications of your choice, or access error logs or system configuration files. The managed server option is
recommended for customers who are less technically confident or who lack the time to manage their server personally.

23
Alternatives to 1&1 Dedicated Servers
How much power do you need?
If you’re only just starting a business with a small website, or your online project isn’t particularly data intensive, then the
substantial resources of a dedicated server might be overkill. For a cost-effective solution with performance that sits between
shared hosting and a full-on dedicated server, a 1&1 Virtual Server package might be what you’re looking for. While your
website would still share a server with other customers, you would have the advantage of guaranteed resources, effectively
acting as a separate machine.

Need more flexibility?
While 1&1 Dedicated Servers deliver powerful performance on a consistent basis, maybe you’re unsure what level of
resources you need, or for how long you need it. If this sounds familiar, you should consider the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud
Server. With independently-configurable server resources, the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server can be configured at any time
according to demand. Hourly billing ensures you only pay for the server performance you need, and there’s no base price or
minimum contract period to worry about.

WHAT’S WHAT?

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

25
What‘s What?
The web hosting and server industry is full of complex terminology and acronyms, but sometimes the technical jargon can be
overwhelming! In this section, we’ll break down and simplify terms used frequently in relation to servers to explain what they
really mean.
Bandwidth/Connectivity Speed
Bandwidth or connectivity speed refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over a connection during a set period of
time. The greater the capacity, the faster the connection can respond, e.g. to users visiting your website. Bandwidth is
usually measured in kilo/mega/giga bits per second (K/M/Gbit/s).
External connectivity
External connectivity refers to the ability of a machine to reach other machines not in its local network, allowing remote users
to gain access to it.
Full root access
Simply put, having root access to a server gives you more control. The admin user has the ability to change, update and
install the software and applications running on the server, with access to error logs and system configuration files at any
time. An alternative to full root access is a managed service, where the hosting provider takes care of these services for you.
Hard Disk Space
The amount of storage on a hard disk is usually measured in mega/giga/tera bytes. The amount used depends on the
amount of data you need to store and the size of your applications. Software, applications, databases, dynamic content and
multimedia files such as audio, video, graphics and animation take up considerably more space than static text files.

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

26
What’s What?
HDD
HDD stands for hard disk drive. The hard disk drive is the main and usually largest data storage device in a computer or
server. The operating system, software and most other files are stored on the hard disk drive.
Operating system
An operating system (OS) is software that enables computer hardware to communicate and interoperate with other software.
The operating system is responsible for scheduling tasks, allocating storage and providing the default interface for the user
with installed application suites. 1&1 offers both Microsoft® Windows and Linux operating systems for server products; both
these platforms have strengths depending on what your server needs are and what applications you wish to run.
Professional versions of these two operating systems are also offered as an option.
Parallels® Plesk Panel
Parallels® Plesk Panel is a server administration solution, providing a powerful yet easy-to-use web interface. In just a few
clicks you can gain access to user account administration, configurations and settings, and customise the design of the web
interface to your individual needs – all you need is a web browser.

Processor core(s)
In computing, a processor core is the unit that reads and executes program instructions. The processor, also called the CPU
or Central Processing Unit, is one of the most important parts of a functioning server system.
RAID
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. It is a storage technology that helps
prevent data getting lost when a disk drive fails. RAID keeps multiple copies of data on multiple
disk drives, with several ‘RAID levels’ depending on need.

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

27
What’s What?
All 1&1 Dedicated and Virtual Servers have multiple hard disks that are interconnected using either software or hardware base
RAID (1-6). The 'RAID network' allows increased security of your data as the information is spread
out across multiple hard disks. Should one of them fail, the others will simply keep on working – your server won't be affected
by any malfunction. It will still be possible to request your data, which will remain accessible without having to adjust any
settings manually. Operating the RAID network is just as convenient to the end-user as a system that uses just one hard disk.

 RAID 1 – Automatic mirroring
This level keeps the same data on two drives; reading and writing of data is carried out automatically in the background
using both drives.

 RAID 5 – Power, memory and data security
For higher demands we offer servers with RAID 5 disk arrays; the same data is stored over three or more drives. When a
drive fails, its data can be reconstituted from the information on the others in the array. The drive failure is masked from the
end user.

 RAID 6 – Maximum security
RAID 6 provides maximum performance with the highest security against failure. It can handle two disks failing at the same
time. RAID 6 is suited to complex applications that need the highest levels of availability.

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

28
What’s What?
RAM
RAM stands for Random Access Memory and refers to the fast memory chips in a computer or server used as temporary
workspace by the processors. Generally, the more RAM, the higher the performance. RAM can be divided into various
types:

 Dynamic RAM
Dynamic RAM, also known as DRAM, is the most common type of RAM in use today. The term ‘dynamic’ refers to how
the memory is constantly refreshed.

 Guaranteed RAM
Guaranteed RAM is not a limit but the minimum availability of RAM. No matter how much RAM other servers use, this
amount is available to you at all times.
Server management and server monitoring apps via smartphone
Server management and monitoring are both available from 1&1 via smartphone apps for iPhone and Android:

 1&1 Mobile Server Monitoring App
This app allows you to set up automatic notifications on your smartphone and be alerted if a service has a status change
regarding your server availability.

 1&1 Mobile Cloud Server Management App
This app allows you to adjust the number of processor cores, the amount of RAM and the hard disk storage space for
your 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server at any time from your smartphone.

® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

29
What’s What?
SSL Certificate
An SSL Certificate is a means of encrypting personal data transmitted over the Internet. Data between the web server and
website visitors is exchanged in encryption mode, protecting personal data such as bank details and customer information
from unauthorised access. An SSL connection can be identified by the 'https://' in the address line of the browser – so a
visitor can tell that communication with the website can’t be monitored by any third party.
Snapshot
Snapshot is a tool that allows you to easily create a record of your server configurations for each virtual machine of your 1&1
Dynamic Cloud Server package as and when you need it, free of charge. You can freeze each configuration and database
on demand and use it as a recovery point. Each Snapshot can be saved and every new one created will override the
previous one.
Traffic
In relation to servers, traffic is a very general term that typically refers to the overall amount of data transmitted
over a network at a given time. Traffic and bandwidth can be compared to pipes and the water that flows in them –
traffic corresponds to the water and bandwidth to the width of the pipe, therefore wider pipes equal more
bandwidth. Traffic is generally measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). All 1&1 Servers come with unlimited traffic,
which means you don’t have to worry about your costs in peak/off peak traffic transmissions.
vCore(s)
A vCore or virtual core is part of a single CPU that splits its operations between multiple processes that do not
interfere with each other. vCores are different to physical cores, which are physically separate from each other.
Virtual machine
In the context of the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server, a virtual machine or VM refers to an individually configurable unit
that behaves like a single server, but which actually shares space with other virtual machines on a server. The
advantage of VMs is that they can easily be scaled up or down depending on your performance requirements.
® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013

30
Linux or Windows?
One big choice you have when ordering a 1&1 Server package is whether to opt for a Linux, Windows or Managed operating
system. Both platforms work with any computer (e.g. you don’t need Linux installed on your machine at home to use a Linux
server) and are capable of powering impressive websites and online projects. Each platform has its own distinct advantages
for users:
Linux
Characteristically reliable, stable and efficient, Linux is proven in the most demanding web server environments.
If you plan to incorporate work that uses PHP, Perl or MySQL languages, Linux is the solution you should choose. Linux is
also ideal for the kind of websites that display information as a brochure, in newsletter format or as data sheets. Linux works
well for ‘brochureware’ sites that offer interaction via enquiry forms, online purchasing
and other eCommerce functions.
When looking for ready-to-use solutions to power your website, applications such as blogs, content management systems or
discussion boards, more open source applications can be found for Linux hosting, while software for Windows hosting is
more likely to be based on licensed sources you have to pay for.

Windows
Windows facilitates varying degrees of design and management through a drag-and-drop philosophy via .NET Framework
and SharePoint. In this way, Windows presents an advantage when it comes to the integration of Windows applications
when you’re designing your website. Essential Windows-specific applications such as ASP® work particularly well.
Windows also presents an advantage if you plan to incorporate searchable databases on your website.
The reduced development time and better integrated functionality characteristics of Windows offer a real
advantage for users wishing to incorporate database facilities.

  • 3. Introduction Whatever your development plans are, your server has to meet your requirements. At 1&1, we understand this. Our servers guarantee performance, flexibility and security. We offer a flexible range of servers for every demand, with the latest generation of hardware and unlimited traffic. Sometimes, it might not be clear what the best 1&1 Server option is. The aim of this guide is to give you a better understanding of server technology in general, and how the various 1&1 Server products offer different advantages to you and your business. You’ll then be better informed when it comes to selecting a 1&1 Server solution. There are sections covering each 1&1 Server product: 1&1 Virtual Servers , 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server, and 1&1 Dedicated Servers. Each section gives an overview of the product and its features, as well as benefits and possible alternatives. In the What’s What? section, we examine some commonly used technical terms and acronyms, to give you a clearer understanding of the language used in the world of servers. We also give you an overview of Linux, Windows and 1&1 Managed to help you choose the operating system that best suits your needs. We hope that this guide provides a valuable resource when selecting your 1&1 Server solution! If you have any further questions, you can visit the ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 FAQs on our website http://faq.1and1.co.uk/ 3
  • 4. 1&1 VIRTUAL SERVERS ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 4
  • 5. What is a Virtual Server? What is a Virtual Server? For many users, having an entire set of powerful machines dedicated to their needs is overkill, so it makes economic sense to share. A virtual server is a solution whereby each user is allocated their own private portion of resources on a server that is shared among several users, thus the term virtual server. Each user then effectively has their own server running completely independently of the others, functioning in the same way as a regular server. Different users of the same physical server would never have access to other users’ data. What can you do with a Virtual Server? With virtual servers, you can host multiple websites, databases, forums, blogs and much more, without having to invest in the hardware to run a dedicated physical server. Until you have data-intensive needs, a virtual server will fit the bill for most users. Do I need to be a technical wiz to use a Virtual Server? Not at all. The management software 1&1 provides – Parallels® Plesk Panel – simplifies the process of managing your virtual server. You can control your server via the 1&1 Control Panel with ease, and you do not need to have expert knowledge of servers. We provide useful online FAQs, expert support by e-mail and phone, and you can contact our sales and support team 24/7 on 0844 335 1211. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 5
  • 6. What is a Virtual Server? What’s the difference between shared hosting and a virtual server? Virtual servers differ from shared hosting as each customer’s virtual server is effectively separate from those of other customers and is provided with dedicated resources. If you need more control over your hosting environment or if your website becomes so busy that you need to take the next step up and move from shared resources to dedicated resources, then a virtual server is an ideal intermediate step without the outlay of a dedicated server. What’s the difference between a cloud server and a virtual server? A cloud server gives you the ability to scale multiple virtual machines across multiple servers using cloud architecture, whereas a virtual server is a single segment of one physical server and provides a virtual environment to provide dedicated resources as and when you need them. What’s the difference between a dedicated server and a virtual server? A virtual server differs from a dedicated server in that a user does not have a complete server dedicated to their content, but rather an area with a set of resources within a shared server that behaves as though it is a separate machine. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 6
  • 7. 1&1 Virtual Server Features The features below give an outline of what 1&1 Virtual Servers can deliver to meet your business needs:  Value for money: A cost-effective server solution with countless configuration options  Choice of operating system: Linux or Windows  Mobile Applications: Free mobile app for server monitoring  Traffic: Unlimited traffic  Support: 24/7 expert technical support via e-mail and phone 1&1 Virtual Servers are broken down into three different categories offering different levels of performance:  1&1 Virtual Server L This is a good package for all-round performance for your small online projects (hosting a website, databases, forums and blogs). RAM and storage is ample for small businesses who want to move up from shared hosting.  1&1 Virtual Server XL This package is well suited to hosting several websites and advanced online projects. This package offers a substantial amount of RAM and storage for medium sized businesses wanting to develop.  1&1 Virtual Server XXL This package is ideal for hosting multiple large websites and can handle professional and high-end online projects with ease. It offers an extensive amount of RAM and storage for large sized businesses wanting to increase performance. For more details please visit our 1and1.co.uk website ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 7
  • 8. 1&1 Virtual Server Benefits With a 1&1 Virtual Server you’ll benefit from a flexible range of options, with the latest generation of hardware and unlimited traffic. Who can benefit from 1&1 Virtual Servers? Virtual servers are the ideal solution for any growing business. A virtual server shares server hardware resources, so the running costs are significantly lower than having your own physical server. Extremely reliable and flexible, 1&1 Virtual Servers are ideal if you want the freedom of a dedicated server but at a shared hosting price. Below are some of the benefits in detail:  Value for money Using one of our 1&1 Virtual Server packages will ensure that you have the technical foundation to support your continued success. Cost-effective with countless configuration options, 1&1 Virtual Servers deliver an excellent price/performance ratio.  Excellent performance features All 1&1 Virtual Servers use high-performance components and provide top-tier connectivity.  Choose your operating system Select the operating system for your virtual server that best meets your business needs; we offer both Linux and Windows. We have a wide selection of intuitive administrator tools so you can manage the resources to match your evolving business needs. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 8
  • 9. 1&1 Virtual Server Benefits  Unmatched security Our sophisticated security management platform ensures that your virtual server’s data is protected at all times. We are proud to possess some of the most secure data centres in Europe. For more information you can visit the ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 FAQs on our website http://faq.1and1.co.uk/ 9
  • 10. Alternatives to 1&1 Virtual Servers Do you want to customise features to your business needs and manage your costs? Having a virtual server means you have one virtual machine on a server that is shared among several users. This is ideal for smaller business as it makes economic sense. The level of performance required can be chosen with our three packages: 1&1 Virtual Server L, 1&1 Virtual Server XL and 1&1 Virtual Server XXL. However, if your online projects have outgrown your current hosting resources and you need the capability for even more power, then we suggest the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server. With the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server you can add up to 99 virtual machines, which can be customised to your configuration needs at any point during your contract to handle peaks in traffic. You can choose the amount of RAM, hard disk space and vCores needed. A cloud infrastructure is suitable for customers requiring flexibility to increase or decrease resources at certain peak times, providing scalability and complete cost control. Do you want a fixed monthly rate and dedicated high performance based on your known/expected requirements? Dedicated servers provide guaranteed resources with high levels of performance and flexibility. With dedicated servers, even large websites with high user traffic and extensive content like forums and blogs are easy to maintain. 1&1 Dedicated Servers are ideal for small, medium and large business wanting to run data-intensive websites and applications, at a fixed monthly rate. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 10
  • 11. 1&1 DYNAMIC CLOUD SERVER ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 11
  • 12. What is a Cloud Server? What is a cloud server? Cloud computing allows you to store, access and share data from a cluster of Internet-connected devices known as ‘the cloud’. Cloud servers use the resources of a group of servers, allowing your websites and projects to use resources on a scalable basis. Because hardware resources are available virtually, it’s much simpler to vary them according to your current requirements. What can you do with a cloud server? Cloud servers can be used for hosting single or multiple websites, as well as application servers, database servers, file or mail servers, name or web servers or any other type of servers that requires internet access. • 13. What is a Cloud Server? What’s the difference between shared hosting and a cloud server? Shared web hosting uses space on a server, sharing resources with other users. Cloud infrastructure provides customers with the flexibility to increase or decrease their resources at certain times, offering enhanced performance and cost control. What’s the difference between a virtual server and a cloud server? A cloud server gives you the ability to scale multiple virtual machines across multiple servers, whereas a virtual server is a single segment of one physical server. What’s the difference between a dedicated server and a cloud server? Unlike a cloud server, which stores data on a number of devices connected to the Internet, a dedicated server is completely contained within a single defined set of server hardware. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 13

What can you do with a dedicated server? Dedicated servers are used for a wide variety of purposes, from simply hosting websites to managing databases, e-mails, web applications, file storage and backups. With dedicated servers, even large websites with high user traffic and extensive content like forums and blogs are easy to maintain. • 20. What is a Dedicated Server? What’s the difference between shared hosting and a dedicated server? In a standard web hosting environment, websites from several hosting customers share the same server hardware, software, operating systems, and various additional resources. Hosting content on a dedicated server differs in that each customer’s data is hosted completely separately and does not compete for resources, guaranteeing a certain level of consistent performance. What’s the difference between a virtual server and a dedicated server? A virtual server differs from a dedicated server in that a user does not have a complete server dedicated to their content, but rather an area with a set of resources within a shared server that behaves as though it is a separate machine. What’s the difference between a cloud server and a dedicated server? Unlike a cloud server, which stores data on a number of devices connected to the Internet, a dedicated server is completely contained within a single defined set of server hardware. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 20

It’s all available at any time via your 1&1 Control Panel and the 1&1 Customer Shop.  Full root access or managed by 1&1 For customers who know exactly what applications they want to run, full root access is recommended, as it gives the user all permissions to change the whole system at their own discretion. With a managed server, we take care of security updates, system maintenance, initial configuration and installation, and hardware replacement. There are no limits on memory usage, number of running processes, CPU usage, etc. However, managed servers do not allow you to install applications of your choice, or access error logs or system configuration files. The managed server option is recommended for customers who are less technically confident or who lack the time to manage their server personally. • 24. Alternatives to 1&1 Dedicated Servers How much power do you need? If you’re only just starting a business with a small website, or your online project isn’t particularly data intensive, then the substantial resources of a dedicated server might be overkill. For a cost-effective solution with performance that sits between shared hosting and a full-on dedicated server, a 1&1 Virtual Server package might be what you’re looking for. While your website would still share a server with other customers, you would have the advantage of guaranteed resources, effectively acting as a separate machine. Need more flexibility? While 1&1 Dedicated Servers deliver powerful performance on a consistent basis, maybe you’re unsure what level of resources you need, or for how long you need it. If this sounds familiar, you should consider the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server. With independently-configurable server resources, the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server can be configured at any time according to demand. Hourly billing ensures you only pay for the server performance you need, and there’s no base price or minimum contract period to worry about. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 24
  • 25. WHAT’S WHAT? ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 25
  • 26. What‘s What? The web hosting and server industry is full of complex terminology and acronyms, but sometimes the technical jargon can be overwhelming! In this section, we’ll break down and simplify terms used frequently in relation to servers to explain what they really mean. Bandwidth/Connectivity Speed Bandwidth or connectivity speed refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over a connection during a set period of time. The greater the capacity, the faster the connection can respond, e.g. to users visiting your website. Bandwidth is usually measured in kilo/mega/giga bits per second (K/M/Gbit/s). External connectivity External connectivity refers to the ability of a machine to reach other machines not in its local network, allowing remote users to gain access to it. Full root access Simply put, having root access to a server gives you more control. The admin user has the ability to change, update and install the software and applications running on the server, with access to error logs and system configuration files at any time. An alternative to full root access is a managed service, where the hosting provider takes care of these services for you. Hard Disk Space The amount of storage on a hard disk is usually measured in mega/giga/tera bytes. The amount used depends on the amount of data you need to store and the size of your applications. Software, applications, databases, dynamic content and multimedia files such as audio, video, graphics and animation take up considerably more space than static text files. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 26
  • 27. What’s What? HDD HDD stands for hard disk drive. The hard disk drive is the main and usually largest data storage device in a computer or server. The operating system, software and most other files are stored on the hard disk drive. Operating system An operating system (OS) is software that enables computer hardware to communicate and interoperate with other software. The operating system is responsible for scheduling tasks, allocating storage and providing the default interface for the user with installed application suites. 1&1 offers both Microsoft® Windows and Linux operating systems for server products; both these platforms have strengths depending on what your server needs are and what applications you wish to run. Professional versions of these two operating systems are also offered as an option. Parallels® Plesk Panel Parallels® Plesk Panel is a server administration solution, providing a powerful yet easy-to-use web interface. In just a few clicks you can gain access to user account administration, configurations and settings, and customise the design of the web interface to your individual needs – all you need is a web browser. Processor core(s) In computing, a processor core is the unit that reads and executes program instructions. The processor, also called the CPU or Central Processing Unit, is one of the most important parts of a functioning server system. RAID RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. It is a storage technology that helps prevent data getting lost when a disk drive fails. RAID keeps multiple copies of data on multiple disk drives, with several ‘RAID levels’ depending on need. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 27
  • 28. What’s What? All 1&1 Dedicated and Virtual Servers have multiple hard disks that are interconnected using either software or hardware base RAID (1-6). The 'RAID network' allows increased security of your data as the information is spread out across multiple hard disks. Should one of them fail, the others will simply keep on working – your server won't be affected by any malfunction. It will still be possible to request your data, which will remain accessible without having to adjust any settings manually. Operating the RAID network is just as convenient to the end-user as a system that uses just one hard disk.  RAID 1 – Automatic mirroring This level keeps the same data on two drives; reading and writing of data is carried out automatically in the background using both drives.  RAID 5 – Power, memory and data security For higher demands we offer servers with RAID 5 disk arrays; the same data is stored over three or more drives. When a drive fails, its data can be reconstituted from the information on the others in the array. The drive failure is masked from the end user.  RAID 6 – Maximum security RAID 6 provides maximum performance with the highest security against failure. It can handle two disks failing at the same time. RAID 6 is suited to complex applications that need the highest levels of availability. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 28
  • 29. What’s What? RAM RAM stands for Random Access Memory and refers to the fast memory chips in a computer or server used as temporary workspace by the processors. Generally, the more RAM, the higher the performance. RAM can be divided into various types:  Dynamic RAM Dynamic RAM, also known as DRAM, is the most common type of RAM in use today. The term ‘dynamic’ refers to how the memory is constantly refreshed.  Guaranteed RAM Guaranteed RAM is not a limit but the minimum availability of RAM. No matter how much RAM other servers use, this amount is available to you at all times. Server management and server monitoring apps via smartphone Server management and monitoring are both available from 1&1 via smartphone apps for iPhone and Android:  1&1 Mobile Server Monitoring App This app allows you to set up automatic notifications on your smartphone and be alerted if a service has a status change regarding your server availability.  1&1 Mobile Cloud Server Management App This app allows you to adjust the number of processor cores, the amount of RAM and the hard disk storage space for your 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server at any time from your smartphone. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 29
  • 30. What’s What? SSL Certificate An SSL Certificate is a means of encrypting personal data transmitted over the Internet. Data between the web server and website visitors is exchanged in encryption mode, protecting personal data such as bank details and customer information from unauthorised access. An SSL connection can be identified by the 'https://' in the address line of the browser – so a visitor can tell that communication with the website can’t be monitored by any third party. Snapshot Snapshot is a tool that allows you to easily create a record of your server configurations for each virtual machine of your 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server package as and when you need it, free of charge. You can freeze each configuration and database on demand and use it as a recovery point. Each Snapshot can be saved and every new one created will override the previous one. Traffic In relation to servers, traffic is a very general term that typically refers to the overall amount of data transmitted over a network at a given time. Traffic and bandwidth can be compared to pipes and the water that flows in them – traffic corresponds to the water and bandwidth to the width of the pipe, therefore wider pipes equal more bandwidth. Traffic is generally measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). All 1&1 Servers come with unlimited traffic, which means you don’t have to worry about your costs in peak/off peak traffic transmissions. vCore(s) A vCore or virtual core is part of a single CPU that splits its operations between multiple processes that do not interfere with each other. vCores are different to physical cores, which are physically separate from each other. Virtual machine In the context of the 1&1 Dynamic Cloud Server, a virtual machine or VM refers to an individually configurable unit that behaves like a single server, but which actually shares space with other virtual machines on a server. The advantage of VMs is that they can easily be scaled up or down depending on your performance requirements. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 30
  • 31. Linux or Windows? One big choice you have when ordering a 1&1 Server package is whether to opt for a Linux, Windows or Managed operating system. Both platforms work with any computer (e.g. you don’t need Linux installed on your machine at home to use a Linux server) and are capable of powering impressive websites and online projects. Each platform has its own distinct advantages for users: Linux Characteristically reliable, stable and efficient, Linux is proven in the most demanding web server environments. If you plan to incorporate work that uses PHP, Perl or MySQL languages, Linux is the solution you should choose. Linux is also ideal for the kind of websites that display information as a brochure, in newsletter format or as data sheets. Linux works well for ‘brochureware’ sites that offer interaction via enquiry forms, online purchasing and other eCommerce functions. When looking for ready-to-use solutions to power your website, applications such as blogs, content management systems or discussion boards, more open source applications can be found for Linux hosting, while software for Windows hosting is more likely to be based on licensed sources you have to pay for. Windows Windows facilitates varying degrees of design and management through a drag-and-drop philosophy via .NET Framework and SharePoint. In this way, Windows presents an advantage when it comes to the integration of Windows applications when you’re designing your website. Essential Windows-specific applications such as ASP® work particularly well. Windows also presents an advantage if you plan to incorporate searchable databases on your website. The reduced development time and better integrated functionality characteristics of Windows offer a real advantage for users wishing to incorporate database facilities. ® 1&1 Internet Ltd 2013 31
